Exclusive fishing zones(EFZs) are a type of place-based management tool designed primarily to mitigate conflicts between fishing sectors by granting exclusive rights to one sector to fish the resources that occur in a specific area. The identification of stock structure is a necessary step for the effective management of multistock fisheries. As stocks are reproductively isolated from other members of the population, disregard of individual stock dynamics may alter genetic diversity of a population if one or more stocks are lost due to overexploitation or other causes... The knowledge of individual stock dynamics allows managers to assess fish population stability and set sustainable harvest limits. Monitoring inidividual stock dynamics within a population provides the opportunity to assess differential survival and contribution to the fishery. Once stock structure is uncovered, patterns in stock contribution can be managed by setting up measures to enhance or sustain stocks when annual production is lower than desired.

The Common Fisheries Policy(CFP) is the European Union's instrument for the management of fisheries and aquaculture. The first common measures in the fishing sector date from 1970, when it was agreed that, in principle, EU fishermen should have equal access to Member States’ waters. However, in order to ensure that smaller vessels could continue to fish close to their home ports, a coastal band was reserved for local fishermen who have traditionally fished these areas. Measures were also adopted for a common market in fisheries products. A structural policy was set up to coordinate the modernisation of fishing vessels and on-shore installations.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The Quality Management Program(QMP) is an enhanced inspection program that requires all registered plants to develop and implement an in-plant quality management program. The program provides added assurance that fish products produced in Canada comply with regulatory requirements. The Program relies on the basic concepts of detection and prevention. It enables the fish-processing industry to monitor its own compliance with regulations and to identify and quickly deal with problems in processing operations.

Environmental Effects Monitoring(EEM) is a scientific tool that assesses the effects of effluent from industrial or other sources on fish, fish habitat and the human use of fisheries resources. Information form EEM, taken together with social, economic and technical considerations, may be used to assess the adequacy of the regulations in protecting aquatic environments and to ensure proper management, conservation and protection of aquatic environments. EEM is not just an end-of-pipe measurement of the concentrations of various contaminants in effluent. Monitoring of the fish populations and benthic invertebrate community is done in local aquatic environments, to determine if the effluent is having any effects on fish, fish habitat and the human use of fisheries resources.

Of particular significance in this connection is the unique importance of the nektophagic fish. Thus even if the only management objective is to produce large channel catfish at high density by artificial feeding, and the contribution of natural food is relatively unimportant, it is still desirable to have present a nektophagic fish to control bullfrog tadpoles, which are not eaten by the channel catfish.
