CONT

An acoustic survey is a method of gathering information on the abundance of a fish species using echo sounders. Sound is a form of energy which travels farther and faster underwater than in the air. So using the distance a sound travels and the record it makes when it bounces off of something underwater can tell a researcher a good deal about the creatures passing by underwater.

OBS

In an acoustic survey, a transducer emits a pulse of sound. The transducer can be either fixed or mounted on a moving vessel. The sound moves through the water until it bumps into something, such as a fish, and part of its energy is reflected back to the transducer. Another device, called an echo sounder, amplifies the returned energy and sends it to a recorder where it registers as a mark.

Calcein is an organic compound that can be used to mark fish by either immersion or injection. It is a fluorescing compound that can be seen with ultraviolet light.... Results demonstrate that it works well for marking the otoliths of newly immerged fish in addition to marking the scales. It is not clear... if this will work for adult fish(i. e., if the mark will persist). Results to date suggest that the mark [does not] persist well once exposed to light. As such, it [is not] likely to be useful for scale marking...

CONT

Traditionally, an adipose fin clip was used to externally mark salmon and steelhead tagged with a coded wire tag so that these fish were readily identifiable upon adult recapture … More recently, the use of the adipose fin clip has been expanded to allow for selective fisheries, where marked fish, typically of hatchery origin, are selectively harvested while unmarked fish are released …

For hundreds of thousands of years, the wild coho salmon have returned from the ocean to the Pacific Coast, bringing with them huge quantities of nutrients for humans, animals and plant life. In a comparatively short period of time, the coho have experienced a devastating, northward-progressing collapse.

CONT

Recent efforts at Pacific Northwest hatcheries to mark the majority of their releases of coho salmon with a fin clip provide new opportunities to estimate proportions of hatchery and wild coho salmon in ocean samples... We therefore report genetic estimates for hatchery-marked and unmarked fish in ocean samples and use these estimates to identify hatchery and wild population origins of ocean juvenile coho salmon.

A same designation could refer to a geographic or a geologic entity, sometimes with a slight variant in spelling or writing. It is important to distinguish one from the other and write each correctly according to the given context.

In the central and southern Interior Platform, the Albian comprises, in ascending order, the Mannville Group, Joli Fou Formation, Viking Formation, and an unamed shale beneath the Fish Scale beds which are considered to mark the base of Upper Cretaceous.

OBS

An aqueous current ripple mark characterized by diamond-shaped tongues of sand arranged in a reticular pattern resembling the scales of certain fish. Tongues range from 12 to 25 mm in width and 25 to 50 mm in length; each has one acute angle(formed by two steep sides) pointing downcurrent, and another acute angle(formed by the gentle side extending into the reentrant angle of the steep sides of two tongues of the following) pointing upcurrent; it is common on sand beaches where it forms during the final stages of backwash of each retreating wave. The sides are not more than 1mm high.
