Sagging slope, Big Lookout, Bonne Bay, Newfoundland.-Here, a mountainside has been slowly slipping down en masse since the retreat of the glacier that once filled the fjord. The dome of Big Lookout is sliced in half along a line marked by a 100 m cliff. Tension cracks continue to widen, indicating that the sagging or creeping continues today.

OBS

DEF

Partly land-locked arm of the sea.

CONT

A firth is generally the result of glaciation and very often associated with a large river, where erosion caused by the tidal effects of incoming sea water passing upriver has widened the riverbed to an estuary, such as may be seen in the Firth of Clyde.

OBS

Firth is the Scots word often used to denote a large sea bay in Scotland, which may be part of an estuary, or just an inlet, or even a strait(as in the case of the Pentland Firth). It is cognate to fjord, which has a more narrow sense in English, whereas a firth would most likely be called a fjord if it were situated in Scandinavia.

CONT

Other land uses include lakes, forestry, urban areas and natural vegetation. In this study lakes are assumed to evaporate at potential rate. Forestry is assumed to evaporate at 10 per cent above the calculated evapotranspiration from grass. Urban areas and natural vegetation are assumed to evaporate at the same rate as grass.

Ottawa : Fisheries and Oceans, 1999.(Canadian Technical Report of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. 2273). Abstract :"The purpose of this report is to characterize the present water quality conditions within this estuarine fjord. We plan to use this research as a platform, from which additional biological data can be coupled to appropriate physical oceanographic and bathymetric data and information on production effort can be used to assess the assimilative capacity of over-wintering sites for salmonid aquaculture in Bay d’Espoir. At the end of this report, we undertake a preliminary assessment of assimilative capacity for Roti Bay, and Voyce Cove, two of the more important over-wintering areas. "--Page 3.
