INRA [Institut national de recherche agronomique] researchers in the Atmospheric and Aquatic Pollution Laboratory in Nancy have developed a novel system using aquatic plants to monitor the quality of wastewater from sewage treatment plants. The plants chosen(Fontinalis, Ceratophyllum, Elodea, Lemna) develop in this water while accumulating a certain number of organic and inorganic micropollutants, thus enabling the detection of accidental pollution or components which are undetectable in water. This system, or "bio-station" constitutes a high-performance and economical supplementary tool to continuously monitor the contamination of wastewater from sewage treatment plants before it enters a river. A pilot plant has successfully been installed in the Nancy sewage treatment plant.

Les chercheurs de l'INRA [Institut national de recherche agronomique] ont mis au point un dispositif expérimental appelé «bio-station» basé sur l'utilisation de végétaux bioindicateurs (ou végétaux sentinelles) pour la surveillance directe et continue des eaux de rejet d'une station d'épuration. Pour cela, ils ont mis à profit les propriétés qu'ont certains végétaux (élodées, lentilles d'eau, mousses...), d'accumuler très fortement les micropolluants tels que les métaux lours (cadmium, chrome, cuivre, mercure, nickel, plomb, zinc) et les polluants organiques (HAP, PCB). Des prélèvements de ces végétaux renseignent sur le niveau moyen de contamination et sur la qualité sanitaire des eaux mais surtout, et c'est ce qui fait le principal intérêt de la méthode, cela peut renseigner sur les pics de pollutions passés inaperçus ou sur des polluants présents en concentration trop faible pour être détecté directement dans l'eau.

Les «bio-stations» sont constituées d'un bassin rectangulaire de quelques m³, posé à même le sol et alimenté à partir des eaux à surveiller par un système de pompage.

Male brook trout have been artificially crossed or bred with female lake trout, producing a fertile hybrid known as a splake (from the older name for brook trout, speckled trout, and lake trout). ... These hybrids have characters of both parents and are intermediate in appearance. One character used to distinguish the parents is the pyloric caeca, finger-like outgrowths of the stomach, which aid in digestion by producing enzymes. Brook trout have 23-55, lake trout 93-210 and splake 35-99.

Splake were first produced in the nineteenth century. They are also called wendigo, a name decided on by a contest sponsored by the Carling Conservation Club. The French name is "moulac" (from "truite mouchetée" and "truite de lac").
