FOOD BACTERIUM [4 records]

Record 1 2023-05-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
CONT

Foods with a parasitic bacterium, Bdellovibrio Bacteriovorus. The addition of B. bacteriovorus, an obligate parasite of gram-negative bacteria, to meats and meat products reduces the gram-negative population, lengthens the shelf-life, and reduces the risks of food-borne illness. The organism is intended to be applied to the surface of the food, onto food contact surfaces by spraying or dipping, or as part of a sanitizing rinse. It may also be used on uncooked seafoods and whole eggs. High parasitic activity occurs under aerobic conditions, near neutral pH, and at temperatures [greater or equal] to 20°C. Many pathogens are susceptible to attack by the parasitic organism.

OBS

parasitic bacteria: plural of "parasitic bacterium."

DEF

An acute epidemic infectious intestinal disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, which is found in fecal-contaminated food and water.

OBS

The large volume of fluid produced in the upper intestine overwhelms the capacity of the lower intestine to absorb.

OBS

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) list this disease as a potential biological weapon (Category B) used by terrorists.

OBS

A00: code used in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems.

DEF

CONT

The emergence and dissemination of resistance has made it imperative for laboratories to use in vitro tests that can detect resistance. The concept of antimicrobial resistance testing (ART) should replace antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). ART requires flexibility in testing systems and current AST methods are often handicapped. This is due to an over emphasis on standardization, not accounting for the diversity and complexity of resistance mechanisms.

CONT

The pilot survey for antimicrobial(AMR) resistant bacteria in Australian food is designed to provide data that can be used to estimate the prevalence of AMR bacteria in selected foods purchased at retail outlets. Four retail foods; poultry, beef, pork and lettuce along with four target organisms; Campylobacter, Salmonella, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus constitute the nine food/bacterium combinations included in the survey.... The results of AMR testing indicated that resistance to the majority of antimicrobials tested is low(< 10%).

CONT
