The Department of the Commissioner of Agriculture and Public Works was established March 4, 1868. The name changed in 1874 to Department of the Commissioner of Agriculture and Arts, although not officially changed until March 2, 1877. Prior to the formation of the Ontario Department of Agriculture, agricultural administration in Upper Canada was handled by a Board of Agriculture, later named the Bureau of Agriculture. Name changed in 1885 to Department of Agriculture, although not officially changed until March 23, 1888, and again May 18, 1966 to Department of Agriculture and Food. A further name change occurred April 1, 1972 to Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The Food Research Division of the Bureau of Chemical Safety engages in a range of research activities related to the identification, determination, distribution, and sources of, and of the effects of processing on, potentially hazardous chemicals in the food supply. Major activities of the Division are the development of methods of analysis for such chemicals, the conduct of surveys to determine the levels and extent of contamination of food; as well as National Surveys to determine human exposure to these chemicals. These National Surveys include the Total Diet Study, and the Human Breast Milk Survey. [The] BCS [Bureau of Chemical Safety of Health Canada] is composed of three divisions : Chemical Health Hazard Assessment, Food Research and Toxicology Research. The Chemical Health Hazard Assessment Division(CHHAD) is responsible for establishing regulatory and non-regulatory measures, as required, to ensure the chemical safety of the food supply in Canada.
