In our recent ethnographic explorations we work with people who have moved from non-rural contexts to the countryside for ideological and/or practical reasons to implement the peasant lifestyle and economy... We use the concept of "neo-peasants" to define this group. Many of neo-peasants believe that a sustainable lifestyle can only be implemented in the countryside, and that cities are by definition unsustainable. They mainly originate from movements that call for self-management, direct democracy, responsible consumption, food sovereignty, autonomy, and degrowth. 1, record 2, English, - neo%2Dpeasant

The economy exists entirely within society, because all parts of the human economy require interaction among people. However, society is much more than just the economy. Friends and families, music and art, religion and ethics are important elements of society, but are not primarily based on exchanging goods and services. Society, in turn, exists entirely within the environment. Our basic requirements--air, food and water--come from the environment, as do the energy and raw materials for housing, transportation and the products we depend on. Finally, the environment surrounds society. At an earlier point in human history, the environment largely determined the shape of society. Today the opposite is true : human activity is reshaping the environment at an ever-increasing rate. The parts of the environment unaffected by human activity are getting smaller all the time. 2, record 8, English, - human%20economy

4, record 8, French, - %C3%A9conomie%20humaine

Peter Dauvergne developed the concept of a "shadow ecology" to assess the total environmental impact of one country on resource management in another country or area. Aspects of a shadow ecology include government aid and loans; corporate practices, investment, and technology transfers; and trade factos such as consumption, export and consumer prices, and import tariffs. 2, record 13, English, - shadow%20ecology

The major cities of the economically powerful Western nations constitute the nodes of these networks, enabling these nations to draw upon the ecological capital of all other nations to provide food for their populations, energy and materials for their economies, and even land, air and water to absorb their waste by-products. This ecological capital, which may be found thousands of miles from the regions in which it is used, forms the shadow ecology of an economy. The oceans, the atmosphere(climate), and other common assets also form part of this shadow ecology, which includes the environmental resources a country draws from other countries and the global common assets. 3, record 13, English, - shadow%20ecology

Canada-Saskatchewan Agri-Food Innovation Fund, known as AFIF. Established in 1995, the Fund grew from an idea into reality and has helped eight key sectors of the agriculture economy grow. The federal-provincial agreement under which the Fund operated ended on March 31, 2003, but many of the AFIF-generated benefits will continue to provide A Lasting Legacy in the province for years to come. AFIF provided financial support to about 300 projects, embracing a wide range of research and development activities within the expanding agriculture and food sector of the Saskatchewan economy. AFIF projects are as diverse as the economy--from bumble bees to bison burgers and from plants that fight back against bugs to making canary seed an edible product for humans to eat. 1, record 14, English, - Canada%2DSaskatchewan%20Agri%2DFood%20Innovation%20Fund

The main premise of this essay is that an early escape from hunger is not primarily the result of private decisions in response to free-market forces. Improved food security stems directly from a set of government policies that integrates the food economy into a development strategy that seeks rapid economic growth with improved income distribution(Timmer, et al., 1983). 1, record 16, English, - food%20economy
