[A] root vegetable [is] a part of a plant grown underground and eaten as food. Root vegetables are a diverse group of foods, including culinary staples such as potatoes, onions, and carrots. 3, record 12, French, - l%C3%A9gume%2Dracine

Intense sweeteners are many times sweeter than sugar which means they can be used in much smaller amounts. They are classed as food additives and added to foods to replace sugar to provide low or lower energy/kilojoule foods or foods that are reduced in sugar or sugar-free. Some intense sweeteners occur naturally in some plants and can be extracted to produce a highly concentrated extract. Examples are steviol glycosides extracted from the South American plant "Stevia rebaudiana" Bertoni(stevia) and monk fruit extract(also called luo han guo extract) which is derived from the fruit of a perennial vine native to southern China. 3, record 13, English, - intense%20sweetener

Rhizodegradation... is a much slower process than phytodegradation. Microorganisms(yeast, fungi, or bacteria) consume and digest organic substances for nutrition and energy. Certain microorganisms can digest organic substances such as fuels or solvents that are hazardous to humans and break them down into harmless products through biodegradation. Natural substances released by the plant roots-sugars, alcohols, and acids-contain organic carbon that provides food for soil microorganisms, and the additional nutrients enhance their activity. 3, record 26, English, - rhizodegradation

As part of its mission to protect the health of American agriculture, the United States Department of Agriculture's(USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service(APHIS) works to prevent foreign animal diseases from entering the U. The build-up of the grain starts from a tiny bit of coagulated starch, the core of the starch grain in the making. This origin of the starch grain, the hilum, can be observed quite well with the help of a microscope. Precision placement is truly the most environmentally friendly fertilizing and seeding option to date. The fertilizer is placed below the soil surface and below the surface residue. Chemicals possess the properties of inhibiting the feeding of insect pests... these can be classed as antifeedants. The first chemicals noticed with these properties were initially referred to as repellants, but they are not repellants in that they do not merely drive the insect away to another plant but do actually inhibit feeding on that plant. In laboratory tests insects have remained on treated plants indefinitely and eventually starved to death without eating the leaves. In field tests the insects were free to wander elsewhere seeking food... they either found weed plants to feed on or died of predation and starvation. 8, record 53, English, - antifeedant

Natural types are plant exudates(gum arabic), seaweed extracts(agar), plant seed gums or mucilages(guar gum), cereal gums(starches), fermentation gums(dextran), and animal products(gelatin). Semisynthetic types are modified celluloses and modified starches. Completely synthetic types are also available, e. g., polyvinylpyrrolidone. Lignocellulosic biomass, or plant biomass, is an attractive source for biofuels. The public and researchers alike are intrigued by the idea of using readily available “plant waste,” such as corn stover, sawdust, or other agricultural residue, to create carbon-neutral transportation fuels. 4, record 72, English, - lignocellulosic%20biomass

Ligno-cellulosic material is the nonstarch, fibrous part of plant materials. Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin are its three major constituents. Unlike carbohydrate or starch, ligno-celllulose is not easily digestible by humans... Ligno-cellulosic biomass is not part of the human food chain, and therefore its use for biogas or bio-oil does not threaten the world's food supply. 2, record 72, English, - lignocellulosic%20biomass

The soil-plant system is one of the most important components in agricultural and natural ecosystems. Nutrient dynamics in soil-plant systems not only reflect the pattern of nutrient flow but also influence food production and quality, and the contaminant pathways in agricultural and natural ecosystems. In soil-plant systems, interaction between nutrients occur when the supply of one nutrient affects the movement, absorption, or utilization of an nutrient within the soil, soil-root interface(rhizosphere), or plant. External release of radioactivity resulting in a dose to the most exposed individual off-site of the order of a few milisieverts. With such a release the need for off-site protective actions would be generally unlikely except possibly for local food control. Significant damage to the nuclear facility. Such an accident might include damage to nuclear plant leading to major on-site recovery problems such as partial core melt in a power reactor and comparable events at non-reactor installations. Irradiation of one or more workers which results in an overexposure where a high probability of early death occurs. 1, record 88, English, - accident%20without%20significant%20off%2Dsite%20risk
