The world’s first laboratory-grown beef burger was flipped out of a petri dish and into a frying pan on Monday, with food tasters declaring it tasted "close to meat." Grown in vitro from cattle stem cells at a cost of 250,000 euros ($332,000), the burger was cooked and eaten in front of television cameras to gain the greatest media coverage for the culmination of a five-year science experiment. Resembling a standard circular-shaped red meat patty, it was created by knitting together 20,000 strands of laboratory-grown protein, combined with other ingredients normally used in burgers, such as salt, breadcrumbs and egg powder. Red beet juice and saffron were added to give it color. 1, record 2, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The first laboratory-produced meat patty (cultured beef burger) presented in London on August 5, 2013, by Dr. Mark Post, a physiologist from Maastricht University in the Netherlands, was dubbed the "Frankenburger." The professor and his colleagues produced the meat-like substance by cultivating muscle tissue from cow stem cells in fetal serum and other growth-promoting materials (vitamines, amino acids, growth hormones, sugar, etc.). The laboratory-grown meat at this stage of development is prohibitively expensive, but might one day become a substitute for "real" meat. The product needs to be enhanced to improve its texture, taste and appearance. Some scientists predict that cultured meat might be commercially available within a decade. Others say that it will be possible to grow it in one’s own kitchen within 20 years. 13, record 2, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 OBS
The development of meat substitutes is praised on ethical grounds by animal rights or welfare activists since these products have the potential to greatly reduce the inhumane raising and slaughtering of animals raised for meat. Environmentalists, economists and scientists support these products since they might one day be a cost-effective means of meeting world demands for meat, while greatly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and waste, as well as the use of water, farmland and animal feed that make intensive animal farming unsustainable. On the other hand, natural food advocates have serious doubts concerning ingredients needed to grow and enhance these products, and the long term safety of their consumption; and meat industry proponents argue that the technology still requires stem cell donors(the cells from a single donor cannot replicate indefinitely) and that the product remains a far cry from "real" meat. Only time will tell if these products will, in a perhaps not so distant future, entirely replace, or only supplement, the meat industry. 13, record 2, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 3 OBS
cultured beef hamburger: A "hamburger" is a minced beef patty. Terms such as "cultured beef hamburger" could therefore be considered pleonastic. The term "burger" is the shortened form of "hamburger." While burgers are traditionally made of beef, non-beef burgers have become popular, and modifiers such as "veggie," "tuna," "chicken," "nut," and "soya" are used to describe them. Given this relatively new reality, the use of seemingly pleonastic terms such as "cultured beef burger" may be justified. 13, record 2, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 4 OBS
The combination of terms such as "hamburger," "cultured," "laboratory," "in vitro" and their short forms to create neologisms designating this product yields an impressive number of synonyms. This will remain the case as long as terminology used to describe this relatively new concept is not well established. 13, record 2, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 5 OBS
synthetic hamburger; artificial hamburger: The terms "synthetic meat" and "artificial meat" designate products that imitate meat but that are not necessarily laboratory-grown from animal cells. Hence, the use of qualifiers such as "synthetic" and "artificial" might lead to confuse a cultured hamburger with, for example, a soy-based burger. 13, record 2, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 6 OBS
Terms such as "Frankenburger" that do not include the modifier "beef" might very well be used some day to designate similar laboratory-grown products made from animal cells other than beef. 13, record 2, English, - laboratory%2Dgrown%20beef%20burger

An International Development Research Centre(IRDC) Project. The frugal use of expensive water trucked in from distant wells was a way of life in the parched desert village of Chungungo, Chile — located in one of the driest parts of the world. In addition to being costly, the water was often contaminated, contributing to poor sanitation, ill health, and low food production. Today, a simple technology collects water from fog, supplying villagers with two or three times more water than they once used and at a lower cost. What makes this possible is the persistent, extensive cloud cover(camanchacas) along the coast of Chile, which creates continual fog as the prevailing winds move inland across the mountains. 1, record 38, English, - Tapping%20Into%20Fog

1, record 38, French, - Capteurs%20de%20brouillard

New technology is set to invade the most important room in the house : the kitchen. Soon you’ll be able to throw out that ancient microwave and cook with a "flashbake" oven using photons, or units of electromagnetic radiation. This oven cooks food just like a conventional oven-cooking from the outside and browning food but in half the time. Appliances are also getting safer. A breakthrough called an induction stove focuses a magnetic field above the burner that boils water in 20 seconds, but will not burn anything else. Trucking has always been the mode of choice for shipping refrigerated product. But with recent developments in technology, the railways are becoming more confident they can measure up as a viable service alternative... A few weeks ago, US-based Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway(BNSF), ran its first all-refrigerated train from Illinois to California. It carried frozen product at a constant temperature for the entire 69-hour trip. There were no re-fuelling stops and so far, no cases of food spoilage... When you put a trailer on a train, there's nobody really looking after it, so if loads go bad or(the units) run out of fuel they don’t notice until it's too late. The difference with the BNSF service is the whole train is refrigerated and therefore gets constant attention. 1, record 49, English, - refrigerated%20train

Arid climates required the development of irrigation technology and because of the scarcity and great value of water, desert societies made early use of this technology to incorporate water into their gardens as a decorative feature. Ancient Persia. Contemporary descriptions of the Mesopotamian and Egyptian water displays illustrate this point by depicting decorative pools and channels that doubled as reservoirs and irrigation canals. These pools tended toward simple geometric shapes, providing the major focus in a garden or courtyard; they often included papyrus, lotus, and other water-associated plants; some were used to raise fish for food. 1, record 52, English, - decorative%20pool

Trichohyalin used in conjunction with transglutiminase forms a naturally-occurring proteinaceous gel with potential application in the areas of food production/stabilization, cosmetics and coverage for open wounds and burns. We have demonstrated that, using cloned cDNAs, the combination of human trichohyalin with an enzyme that is capable of cross-linking proteins can produce a stable, quickly-formed proteinaceous gel. This technology may be useful for the treatment of skin diseases may have benefit as a transglutaminase replacement therapy. [Source Internet]. 1, record 54, English, - transglutaminase

It appears likely that over the end of the decade clinical trials of encapsulated cells to treat many diseases will become a reality. The Food and Drug Administration has already authorized studies to evaluate the safety and biological activity of several types of systems. A new type of electric motor, a brushless motor with no windings or permanent magnets on its rotor. When a current flows in one of the group of windings in the case around the rotor, it creates a magnetic effect which pulls a tooth on the rotor into a position of "minimum reluctance". Rotation continues by switching the current to another winding and pulling another tooth into position. Switch the current fast enough, and the motor spins. 1, record 62, English, - switched%20reluctance%20motor

Such motors have been turning since 1840, but the new SRM designs provide a practical way of switching large currents many thousands of times a second. Several companies including Black and Decker(power tools), Kenwood(food mixes) and Vent-Axia(fans) are sponsoring an SRM development programme. This technology may produce smaller and even simpler electric motors that could be integrated within the hub of a carwheel or of a boat. 1, record 62, English, - switched%20reluctance%20motor
