English

Subject field(s)
  • Animal Biology
  • Animal Husbandry
CONT

There are several advantages to late weaning. It is more natural and results in less stress for the ewe and lambs. There is less risk of the ewe developing mastitis since her milk production has declined significantly by the time the lambs are removed. Late weaning allows the producer to take advantage of available forage for lambs. It enables the producer to keep ewes and lambs in the same management group.

Hay, haylage, baleage, silage, crop residue without grain, and other roughage sources may also be included as acceptable feed sources. Subject field(s)
  • Forage Crops
CONT

Brown mid-rib(BMR) corn has a lower lignin content than other silage corn varieties, and many growers are interested in this type of corn for its higher digestibility and potential to yield more milk than conventional silage corn. With BMR's high fiber digestibility it may help increase dry matter intake of forage and may reduce purchase of concentrates.

OBS

A type of corn especially suited to forage production.

Only with a 1 : 3 grain-to-milk ratio did good quality pasture provide adequate pasture intake at 80 pounds of milk.... Holsteins producing more than 60 pounds of milk with good quality pasture should be supplemented with 1 pound of grain per 4 pounds of milk, with the amount of concentrate varied with milk production and body condition. Generally, 12 pounds to 20 pounds of concentrate are fed to cows when pasture is their sole forage source.

CONT

Grain was individually fed, at approximately a 1:3 grain to milk ratio, before a.m. and p.m milkings.
