The attitude of a satellite is its position in space - its orientation... To stabilize a satellite, the satellite must have a system that keeps it moving evenly through its orbit. Satellites often use a spinning or gyroscopic motion to keep them stable. 4, record 1, English, - gyroscopic%20motion
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
A gyroscope will not only resist being moved out of its vertical position, it will also generate force as it attempts to travel in large, circular patterns. These patterns are most easily seen with a spinning top. As the top begins losing its energy, it never simply spirals straight down in the same direction that it was originally spinning. As it destabilizes, it will always begin slowly rotating or precessing in a slow, even circle that is in the opposite direction to its normal spinning motion. These circular patterns are known as "precessional" motions, and they are another aspect of a gyroscope's movement that will occur either in air or in a vacuum and can be used to overcome gravity. 3, record 1, English, - gyroscopic%20motion

Scuttling may be performed to dispose of an abandoned, old, or captured vessel; to prevent the vessel from becoming a navigation hazard; as an act of self-destruction to prevent the ship from being captured by an enemy force(or, in the case of a vessel engaged in illegal activities, by the authorities) ;as a blockship to restrict navigation through a channel or within a harbor; to provide an artificial reef for divers and marine life; or to alter the flow of rivers. 2, record 12, English, - scuttling

Gyroscopic precession ... When force is applied to a gyro, the device reacts as if the force had been applied at a point 90 degrees from the point of actual application, in the direction of rotation. Precession affects propellers, which act like gyros, and gyro instruments. Its principle effect is on the heading indicator, which tends to drift over time. 8, record 24, English, - precessional%20motion

9, record 24, English, - precessional%20motion

If an airplane changes suddenly from a nose up to a nose down position, as is the case during the take-off roll in a tail wheel airplane, the airplane will yaw sharply to the left as the pilot shoves the wheel forward to raise the tail. Special operations forces and support helicopter landing zones are generally covert. FP [force protection] is achieved by employing use of terrain and CCD [camouflage, concealment and deception] procedures. The FP presence must be balanced with the need to preserve operational secrecy. FP will normally be provided by the SOF [special operations force] units that are being supported. In the event of ground attack, the task of FP will be to warn landing zone personnel and to delay the attackers until the helicopters are able to depart. 1, record 33, English, - special%20operations%20forces%20and%20support%20helicopter%20landing%20zone

The amino acid side-chains extending outward from a polypeptide chain structure may be either hydrophilic or hydrophobic. The most hydrophilic, or water loving, are those with net ionic charges. Nonpolar side-chains tend to cluster together in the interior of protein molecules to avoid exposure to water. The force causing this comes only from the propensity of the surrounding water to resist being forced into ordered structures by the presence of nonpolar groups. The so-called hydrophobic bond is actually an association created by spurned water. 3, record 38, English, - side%2Dchain

In astrophysics, weakly interacting massive particles or WIMPs, are hypothetical particles serving as one possible solution to the dark matter problem. These particles interact through the weak nuclear force and gravity, and possibly through other interactions no stronger than the weak force. Because they do not interact with electromagnetism they cannot be seen directly, and because they do not interact with the strong nuclear force they do not react strongly with atomic nuclei. This combination of properties gives WIMPs many of the properties of neutrinos, save for being far more massive and therefore slower. 4, record 39, English, - weakly%20interacting%20massive%20particle

5, record 39, French, - mauviette

The shovel shear test provides information about the location where the snow could fail in shear. It is best applied for identification of buried weak layers and does not usually produce useful results in layers close to the snow surface. Soft snow near the surface is better tested with the tilt board and the shear frame or an improvised version of this tilt test. 3, record 48, English, - shovel%20shear%20test

Shovel Shear Test. This test can be done on a flat or on a slope. With good technique, the location of weak layers, even thin weak layers, can be found. First dig a hole or pit in the snow. The vertical wall of the pit should be straight up and down, and smooth. Make a mark on the uphill portion of one corner of your pit with your shovel blade. This will mark the boundaries of your column, which should be roughly 30 cm by 30 cm or 12 inches square.(A) Now, cut both sides using a snow saw or your ski, all the way to the floor of the pit making sure that the cuts are straight.(B) The back of the column should only be cut as deep as your shovel blade is long, so measure with your shovel blade(C) and then cut the back.(D) Next, insert your shovel, blade down, in the back cut of the column and pull gently and evenly forward being careful not to lever your shovel handle.(E) Examine the shear layer where the block failed.(F) The force applied to the shovel that causes a weak layer to shear from the layers surrounding it can be rated as follows : Very easy... Easy... Moderate... Hard... 4, record 48, English, - shovel%20shear%20test

Information obtenue d'Action jeunesse. 1, record 55, French, - Semaine%20de%20la%20Jeunesse

In a collaborative project with the Canadian Space Agency, two vibration isolation systems for zero-g environments have been developed-the Motion Isolation Mount(MIM) for orbital flights and the Large Motion Isolation Mount(LMIM) for parabolic flights. The approach taken for MIM has been to develop a mechanism having two parts : a stator attached to the structure and a payload-carrying flotor, with the only coupling between the two components being a flexible umbilical carrying signals and power to the flotor. The flotor is actively magnetically levitated by a set of wide-gap voice coil actuators. Its position relative to the stator is sensed by an optical position sensor while its absolute acceleration is sensed by an inertial accelerometer system. A digital controller uses the sensed information to compute actuator currents based on a control law that regulates acceleration and steady-state position to zero. The weak coupling between stator and flotor and the insensitivity of actuator force with position makes such a system extremely effective for vibration isolation... 2, record 65, English, - motion%20isolation%20mount

Integrated Cantilever Beam Tunneling Sensor. Our researchers have exploited the extremely sensitive quantum tunneling effect between metals to design MEMS sensors that can sense a force applied to a silicon-based, surface micromachined structure with extraordinary sensitivity and six orders of magnitude of dynamic range. The force is applied to a micromachined cantilever(one electrode) and is sensed as a result of a tunneling current produced between the cantilever and a tunneling tip(the other electrode). The sensor is operated in a force rebalance mode such that the cantilever and tip do not actually move with respect to each other but are held in a servo-locked state with the voltage required to maintain the servo-lock proportional to the force being sensed by the cantilever. 2, record 72, English, - force%2Drebalance%20mode

There is one other indicator that the earth is rotating in space. The fact that low pressure regions spin with an anticlockwise motion in the Southern hemisphere, yet in the Northern hemisphere(the high pressure regions) spin with an anticlockwise motion and vice versa raises the question as to what force is being exerted on these winds. Studies of rotating bodies show there is an apparent Coriolis acceleration, which acts sideways on moving objects. Only a Coriolis type acceleration seems to explain the earth's winds and this could only occur if the earth rotates. The fact that the wind direction is always constant is evidence of the earth's consistent rotation. 2, record 73, English, - apparent%20Coriolis%20acceleration

The Unified Task Force(UNITAF) was the American-led effort to bring humanitarian assistance to Somalia. This mission, although it was not UN endeavor, was authorized by Chapter VII of the UN Charter to use "all necessary means" to create a secure environment that would allow the humanitarian agencies to deliver food and general relief in Somalia. UNITAF was also tasked to promote national reconciliation and economic reconstruction of the country. The mission consisted of a four phase program, the last phase being the transfer of responsibilites to UNOSOM in April 1992. 5, record 77, English, - United%20Nations%20Operation%20in%20Somalia

Aircraft Rivets.... For dimpling heavier skins or skins of some of the harder alloys, such as 7075, hot dimpling may be used. This is usually done in the [coin dimpling] manner.... The dies are held in a special squeezer that allows electrical current to flow through the sheet for an accurately measured period of time. This current causes the metal immediately around the dies to heat up, and then air pressure is applied to force the dies together. Rather than the male die being driven into the female, the female die is forced up around the male, causing the hot metal to flow up tighter around the male die, forming a dimple with closer tolerance than that formed with the radius method. 2, record 78, English, - hot%20dimpling

Even when the designer has settled the size and angle of the tail plane, the force which it will experience will be outside the control of the pilot, and although they may automatically compensate for such things as changes in pitching moment on the main planes, they cannot possibly deal with changes of weight such as are caused by the dropping of bombs, consumption of fuel, and changes in the disposition of passengers and cargo. For this reason the adjustable tail plane was introduced, this being operated by an actuating gear and controlled by a wheel or lever in the pilot's cockpit. This enabled the pilot to alter the angle of setting of the tail plane during flight and so cause downward or upward forces upon it at will, thus balancing the aeroplane under all conditions. 2, record 81, English, - adjustable%20tailplane

A liquid filling technique which uses gravity in a vacuum atmosphere. 2, record 91, English, - pressure%20gravity

Pressure gravity. This method fills to a level. It is almost universally restricted to filling carbonated beverages. The flow principle is gravity as the force causing flow into the container. Like the gravity vacuum method, which fills by gravity in a vacuum atmosphere, this method fills by gravity in a pressure atmosphere. Product under pressure is held in an integral overhead supply tank on the rotary. Filling valves are mounted in the tank and are opened against spring pressure by the container being lifted to the valve. When the container is sealed to the valve, a mechanical latch opens a charging valve at the top of the valve vent tube which is above the product level in the supply tank.... Fill level is determined when the rising liquid covers a part in the vent tube through which the air in the container is exhausted as product flows in. 3, record 91, English, - pressure%20gravity

School psychologists are frequently criticized for not effecting change in students referred to them. This article describes one model-process which the author, while functioning as a school psychologist, successfully implemented to eliminate this criticism. Adoption of this approach should result in the school psychologist's being perceived as a viable force in the diagnostic-prescriptive process, rather than merely a tester or gate-keeper for special education. 1, record 99, English, - gate%2Dkeeper

Under some circumstances, the force of a water stream from a fire hose or pump can be used to contain or divert an oil slick; a high-pressure air flow will produce the same results. These techniques have been used with some success to keep oil out of a gap between conventional floating booms or as a temporary containment measure while a boom is being deployed. Other uses of air and water streams include directing oil towards a recovery site, flushing oil from beneath docks, and adjustment of booms once they are in place. 2, record 100, English, - air%2Fwater%20barrier

1, record 100, French, - jets%20d%27air%20ou%20d%27eau
