The attitude of a satellite is its position in space - its orientation... To stabilize a satellite, the satellite must have a system that keeps it moving evenly through its orbit. Satellites often use a spinning or gyroscopic motion to keep them stable. 4, record 1, English, - gyroscopic%20motion
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
A gyroscope will not only resist being moved out of its vertical position, it will also generate force as it attempts to travel in large, circular patterns. These patterns are most easily seen with a spinning top. As the top begins losing its energy, it never simply spirals straight down in the same direction that it was originally spinning. As it destabilizes, it will always begin slowly rotating or precessing in a slow, even circle that is in the opposite direction to its normal spinning motion. These circular patterns are known as "precessional" motions, and they are another aspect of a gyroscope's movement that will occur either in air or in a vacuum and can be used to overcome gravity. 3, record 1, English, - gyroscopic%20motion

A brake fitted to a trailer or other towed vehicle that prevents the towed vehicle travelling faster than the towing vehicle when slowing down or descending an incline. 4, record 3, English, - overrun%20brake
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The principle of an overrun brake is very simple. If the car slows down or brakes, the trailer, caravan, boat trailer or horsebox wants to push forward. This is called overrun. In order to prevent that the towed object going too fast for the car due to its mass, the overrun brake kicks in. There is a sliding piece mounted to the drawbar near the coupling. This contracts as soon as the towed object tries to overrun the car. As a result, the brake cables are pulled and the towed vehicle brakes. The result is that the trailer, caravan, boat trailer or horsebox slows down. Increased pushing force results in increased braking force. 5, record 3, English, - overrun%20brake

Gyros that have stops(not many these days and not the case for the gyros in the CJ6) can be damaged by acro [acrobatics] when they are running. They should be stopped and preferably caged when doing acro. "Smooth" positive-G acro(no snap or tumbing maneuvers) shouldn’t hurt these gyros if they are powered down even if they are not caged.... When you subject that spinning gyro to your aircraft's twists and turns during aerobatics you are imparting more force on its bearings than you would were the gyro turned off and not spinning. It is usually bearing wear the trashes a gyro. This problem is especially severe when you are doing advanced aerobatics. It is really hard on the gyro bearings. I would rather have the gyros turned off to make them last longer. That we have caged or uncaged gyros is really irrelevant to the basic physics involved. 1, record 5, English, - uncaged

Gyroscopic precession ... When force is applied to a gyro, the device reacts as if the force had been applied at a point 90 degrees from the point of actual application, in the direction of rotation. Once a diesel engine is running, the engine speed is monitored and controlled through a governor. The governor ensures that the engine speed stays high enough to idle at the right speed and that the engine speed will not rise too high when full power is demanded. The governor is a simple mechanical device which first appeared on steam engines.... The governor consists of a rotating shaft, which is driven by the diesel engine. A pair of flyweights are linked to the shaft and they rotate as it rotates. The centrifugal force caused by the rotation causes the weights to be thrown outwards as the speed of the shaft rises. If the speed falls the weights move inwards. The flyweights are linked to a collar fitted around the shaft by a pair of arms. As the weights move out, so the collar rises on the shaft. If the weights move inwards, the collar moves down the shaft. The movement of the collar is used to operate the fuel rack lever controlling the amount of fuel supplied to the engine by the injectors. 2, record 8, English, - governor

What are Les Suetes winds? The prevailing wind direction in Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Highlands is westerly, but for a few weeks of the year strong southeast winds, known locally as "Les Suetes," (from the French "sud est") blow across northern Cape Breton’s open plateau and then crash down the western side of the mountains. Between 1972 and 1977 several studies confirmed the hypothesis that air pollutants could travel several thousands of kilometres before deposition and damage occurred. This also implied that cooperation at the international level was necessary to solve problems such as acidification. In response to these acute problems, a High-level Meeting within the Framework of the ECE on the Protection of the Environment was held at ministerial level in November 1979 in Geneva. It resulted in the signature of the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution by 34 Governments and the European Community(EC). The Convention was the first international legally binding instrument to deal with problems of air pollution on a broad regional basis. Besides laying down the general principles of international cooperation for air pollution abatement, the Convention sets up an institutional framework bringing together research and policy. The Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution entered into force in 1983. It has been extended by eight specific protocols. 2, record 19, English, - Convention%20on%20Long%2Drange%20Transboundary%20Air%20Pollution

Founded by eight states(Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Switzerland, United Kingdom) in 1964, the European Pharmacopoeia has the task of laying down common standards for the composition and preparation of substances used in the manufacture of medicines--and so guaranteeing their quality. The Pharmacopoeia has 26 member states, in which its "monographs" have force of law, replacing the old national pharmacopoeias. It is recognised as one of the main authorities on quality and safety of medicines, and its co-operation with the European Union has resulted in the setting-up of a scientific research programme to standardise biological medicines, and an official network of medicine control laboratories(OMCL). This pooling of expertise helps to ensure that the same quality standards are guaranteed throughout Europe. 2, record 26, English, - European%20Pharmacopoeia

1, record 26, French, - Pharmacop%C3%A9e%20europ%C3%A9enne

On the beach the top of the wave breaks and mingles with the foot of the wave, both dashing forward with a force driven by the energy from the height and speed of the collapsing wave. The resulting rush of water is fast and strong and moves sand effortlessly up the beach. The water then comes to a rest as the sand particles settle out. The water then begins flowing back down the beach, first slowly and then faster until it dislodges cohesive sand grains. But the forcing power is much less than that of the on-rushing waves. The particles that settled at the top of the forward rush, stay because of the hysteresis(lagging behind) between erosion speed and settling speed... 3, record 28, English, - hysteresis

Shovel Shear Test. This test can be done on a flat or on a slope. With good technique, the location of weak layers, even thin weak layers, can be found. First dig a hole or pit in the snow. The vertical wall of the pit should be straight up and down, and smooth. Make a mark on the uphill portion of one corner of your pit with your shovel blade. This will mark the boundaries of your column, which should be roughly 30 cm by 30 cm or 12 inches square.(A) Now, cut both sides using a snow saw or your ski, all the way to the floor of the pit making sure that the cuts are straight.(B) The back of the column should only be cut as deep as your shovel blade is long, so measure with your shovel blade(C) and then cut the back.(D) Next, insert your shovel, blade down, in the back cut of the column and pull gently and evenly forward being careful not to lever your shovel handle.(E) Examine the shear layer where the block failed.(F) The force applied to the shovel that causes a weak layer to shear from the layers surrounding it can be rated as follows : Very easy... Surge-blocks, swabs, or plungers are disc shaped devices made to fit tightly within the well. Their edges are usually fitted with rubber or leather rings to make a tight seal against the well casing. Pipe sections are then attached to the surge-block to lower it into the well, above the well screen, and about 15 feet below the water level. The assembly is then repeatedly lifted up and down. The up and down action of the surge-block creates suction and compression strokes that force water in and out of the well through the screened interval, gravel pack, and aquifer. It works like a plunger in the way that it removes small obstructions and sediments from the well. The fire extinguishing equipment for an airliner such as the Douglas DC-10 incorporates three systems with six pressurized agent containers, two for each engine. The containers for the wing-mounted engines are located in pairs in the leading edge of the wing between the nacelle and the fuselage on each side of the aircraft.... The discharge cartridge is an electrically fired explosive unit that provides force to rupture the disk seal in the outlet port of the container and release the extinguishing agent to the deployment lines. One discharge cartridge is installed on each wing-mounted container and two are installed on the aft-engine container. The discharge cartridge contains two squibs(explosive charges) that are fired by an electric circuit that heats the powder to the ignition point. When the fire extinguisher control handle is pulled down, the electric circuit is closed and the squibs are fired. The force of the explosion ruptures the disk seal, thus releasing the extinguishing agent. A screen in the discharge head prevents particles of the disk from entering the deployment line. 2, record 32, English, - fire%20control%20handle

Circuit of electric field measurements of thunderclouds. ... The electric field mill is a device based on electrostatic induction. It consists of one or two electrodes which either rotate in an electrostatic field or become periodically exposed to a field by rotating vanes. Fig.46 illustrates a cylindrical field mill which consists of two cylinder halves that are electrically insulated from each other. An electric motor rotates the two halves in the electric field to be measured so that they become alternately exposed to both the positive and negative direction of the field. The result is that an alternating (ac) signal is generated across the two halves which can be easily amplified. ... Although not commonly used, the cylindrical field mill has the advantage that when mounted in a fixed position it can also indicate the direction of the field. This is accomplished by measuring the phase shift of the ac signal relative to the orientation of electric fields need to be measured. 2, record 39, English, - cylindrical%20field%20mill

Two-degree-of-freedom, dry, tuned-gimbal gyroscope. This name is used to differentiate between this instrument and the floated gyro... In the static condition as the rotor is moved up and down, the motion is accommodated by the flexure pivots associated with the gimbal. This motion is resisted by the spring force of the flexure pivots. As the motor is brought up to velocity, a speed is reached at which the gimbal-flexure pivot combination is in resonance. At resonance no force about the sensitive axes(x, y) can be transmitted between the motor shaft and the rotor; hence, the two are decoupled. 2, record 45, English, - flexure%20pivot

Natural law(or law of nature). The belief in natural law and natural law theories has been one of the most ancient and persistent themes in philosophy, and in legal history and theory. In general, it denotes belief in a system of right or justice common to all men prescribed by the supreme controlling force in the universe and distinct from positive law, law laid down by any particular state or other human organization. The starting points of all natural law thinking have been "reason" and "the nature of man". 2, record 52, French, - droit%20naturel

... Galileo devised an experiment to make measuring gravity much easier. He rolled a ball down a slope to measure the effects of gravity in a slower context. While the force acting on the ball rolling down the slope is just a fraction of the force of gravity, it still demonstrates that the force of gravity works the same on all objects. 1, record 54, English, - effect%20of%20gravity

The effect of good and bad posture can be very simply demonstrated by the following example, "The Wrist Test". When the wrist is held in the neutral position, a moderate blow can be applied to the palm of the hand without causing pain and discomfort. When the wrist is in the neutral position, it can absorb the force best. However, if the blow is applied to the wrist when it is fully extended up or down, the wrist is a poor shock absorber, and is most vulnerable to stress and injury. 1, record 55, English, - Wrist%20Test

The F-15, the most capable air force fighter in the world, will be improved with an advanced long-range AN/APG-63 radar with SAR(synthetic array radar) modifications. With SAR the F-15 Strike Eagle becomes an even more capable weapons system which can fly attack missions against ground targets in all weather, such as the notoriously inclement weather of Europe. Using SAR to analyze radar signals reflected from the ground--at distances of over a hundred kilometers--the system can display extremely high resolution images, discerning objects and features down to 10 feet in size. 3, record 59, English, - synthetic%20array%20radar
