A process for reducing a magnetized material to a neutral state, that is, to a state when both the magnetic induction B and the magnetic field strength H are equal to zero.(...) The standard demagnetization process involves applying a magnetizing force above a critical value for the material used, and successively reversing H in direction as the value of H is steadily reduced to a value less than those to be used in subsequent experiments. If the final value of H is essentially zero, the specimen is demagnetized. 4, record 2, English, - demagnetization

Because a magnetic field exerts a force on a charged particle, this solar field wave "breaks" over the comet, pulling on the ionized gas of the coma. It sweeps away the electrons, which are much lighter, and draws the heavier ions outward, into a long plasma tail(also called an ion tail) that points in the anti-sunward direction. 3, record 14, English, - anti%2Dsunward%20direction

5, record 14, French, - direction%20anti%2Dsolaire

The tipsails are an extension of NASA [National Aeronautics and Space Administration] technology which led to the application of small winglets on many airplanes... The force vector produced by the pressure differential between the two surfaces is directed forward, which results in a cruise drag reduction. Rudders, located at the trailing edge of the tipsails, provide directional control without requiring a special surface dedicated solely to that purpose. 4, record 23, English, - winglet

The Dimension 3000 Scanning Probe Microscope(SPM) encompasses several techniques for studying surface properties of materials at the atomic to micron scale. It measures surface structure and produces images with three-dimensional information. It measures surface roughness and maps the surface based on atomic force, friction, magnetic field, relative stiffness, or electric field gradient. Typical applications : 1. Studying surface of optical components(especially mirrors) [;] 2. Mapping of magnetic properties of tapes[;] 3. Measuring surface pit depth and width. Mode of operation : An atomically sharp tip, held at the end of a cantilever, is scanned in a regular pattern across a surface. As the tip probes the surface, the interaction between the surface and tip is measured using a laser-based system. 3, record 25, English, - scanning%20probe%20microscope

5, record 31, French, - %C3%A9lectrophor%C3%A8se%20en%20champ%20puls%C3%A9

... the magnetic-force microscope(MFM), enables us to look at the actual performance of such heads-the definition, uniformity and strength of the magnetic field they produce. In place of the tungsten or silicon needle, the MFM has a magnetized nickel on probe. When the vibrating probe is brought near a magnetic sample, the tip feels a force that changes its resonance frequency and hence its vibration amplitude. The MFM can trace the magnetic-field pattern emanating from data-recording heads at a resolution of better than 25 nanometers. The device can also study the structure of the magnetic bits that store data on disks and other media, giving insight into both head performance and the quality of the storage medium. 3, record 33, English, - magnetic%2Dforce%20microscope

8, record 43, French, - impesanteur

A field line is a locus that is defined by a vector field and a starting location within the field. A vector field defines a direction at all points in space; a field line may be constructed by tracing a path in the direction of the vector field. More precisely, the tangent line to the path at each point is required to be parallel to the vector field at that point. Field lines are useful for visualizing vector fields, which consist of a separate individual vector for every location in space. If the vector field describes a velocity field, then the field lines follow stream lines in the flow. Perhaps the most familiar example of a vector field described by field lines is the magnetic field, which is often depicted using field lines emanating from a magnet. 1, record 45, English, - field%20line

Oleoresin capsicum (OC) is an oily extract of pepper plants of the genus "Capsicum." ... It is used as a spice in salsa, chili, curries, and hot sauces; as a pharmacologic agent in topical anesthetic and analgesic creams; and as the principal active ingredient in OC spray, or "pepper spray," used by police and others as an antipersonnel agent. OC extract consists of a complex mixture of fat soluble phenols known as capsaicinoids; capsaicin (trans-8-methyl-N-vanillyl-6-nonenamide) and dihydrocapsaicin, the most potent homologues, make up 80-90% of the total. Capsaicinoid content determines the "hotness" of the extract. 3, record 48, English, - Capsicum%20oleoresin

Oleoresin Capsicum. In the early 1980’s Zarc International, Inc. introduced a proprietary "capsicum pepper technology" to be used as a safe and effective non-lethal weapon by military and law enforcement. "Capsicums" are chili peppers which occur in many varieties that range from mild to hot. Capsicum encompasses twenty species and some 300 different varieties of pepper plants. "Oleoresin" is the industrial extraction of the dried ripe fruits of capsicums and contains a complex mixture of highly potent organic compounds. 9, record 48, English, - Capsicum%20oleoresin

8, record 48, French, - ol%C3%A9or%C3%A9sine%20de%20Capsicum

Electrostatic flocking is a modern technique, which utilises a field of static electricity to orient fibres and promote their perpendicular alignment. This technique optimises the results obtained with longer fibres. In this method of electrostatic deposition, the adhesive coated substrate passes between the potentials of a high voltage electrostatic field. An electrode is utilised to give the flock a charge. The charged fibres become aligned with the electric field lines of force. The ground potential is formed by the substrate anode or the grounded parts of the machine. The flock is thus attracted to the adhesive where it becomes embedded. Most fibres adhering to the adhesive-coated surface are perpendicular to it giving a dense pile finish. 3, record 58, English, - electrostatic%20flocking

All magnetic objects produce invisible lines of force that extend between the poles of the object. An easy way to visualize this is to spread iron filings on a sheet of paper and place a bar magnet under the paper. The iron filings will arrange themselves around the magnet and along the magnetic field lines. In the simplest terms, Earth can be thought of as a dipole(2-pole) magnet. Magnetic field lines radiate between Earth's north and south magnetic poles just as they do between the poles of a bar magnet. Charged particles become trapped on these field lines(just as the iron filings are trapped), forming the magnetosphere. Earth's magnetic field lines are not as symmetrical as those of the bar magnet. The impact of the solar wind causes the lines facing sunward to compress, while the field lines facing away from the Sun stream back to form Earth's magnetotail. The magnetosphere extends into the vacuum of space from approximately 80 to 60, 000 kilometers(50 to 37, 280 miles) on the side toward the Sun, and trails out more than 300, 000 kilometers(186, 500 miles) away from the Sun. 4, record 59, English, - Earth%27s%20magnetic%20field

Circuit of electric field measurements of thunderclouds. ... The electric field mill is a device based on electrostatic induction. It consists of one or two electrodes which either rotate in an electrostatic field or become periodically exposed to a field by rotating vanes. Fig.46 illustrates a cylindrical field mill which consists of two cylinder halves that are electrically insulated from each other. An electric motor rotates the two halves in the electric field to be measured so that they become alternately exposed to both the positive and negative direction of the field. The result is that an alternating (ac) signal is generated across the two halves which can be easily amplified. ... Although not commonly used, the cylindrical field mill has the advantage that when mounted in a fixed position it can also indicate the direction of the field. This is accomplished by measuring the phase shift of the ac signal relative to the orientation of electric fields need to be measured. 2, record 60, English, - cylindrical%20field%20mill

... electric propulsion(EP) encompasses a broad variety of strategies for achieving very high exhaust velocities in order to reduce the total propellant burden and corresponding launch mass of present and future space transportation systems. These techniques group broadly into three categories : electrothermal propulsion, wherein the propellant is electrically heated, then expanded thermodynamically through a nozzle; electrostatic propulsion, wherein ionized propellant particles are accelerated through an electric field; and electromagnetic propulsion, wherein current driven through a propellant plasma interacts with an internal or external magnetic field to provide a stream-wise body force. 2, record 61, English, - electrostatic%20propulsion

Magnetoplasmadynamic(MPD) thrusters pass a large current radially outwards through a neutral plasma, from a central cathode to an annular anode. The radial current induces an azimuthal, circular magnetic field. The Lorentz body force acting on ions moving in the discharge current accelerates the plasma along the axis of the electrode structure. MPD thrusters operate at high power levels, kilowatts to megawatts, and provide high thrust with moderate specific impulse. A variant of this design uses an externally applied magnetic field to enable operation at lower power levels. MPD thrusters have been tested in the laboratory and have flown on test and demonstration missions. MPD thrusters are an insufficiently mature technology and consume too much power to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1. 3, record 62, English, - magnetoplasmadynamic%20thruster

The pulsed plasma thruster(PPT) with solid propellant is used for low power propulsion systems; typically with an average power less than thirty watts. Capacitor stored electrical energy is used to create a pulsed arc discharge across the face of a block of propellant, teflon in most implementations to date. The combination of thermal flux, particle bombardment and surface reactions ablates and ionises a small amount of the solid material... The peak discharge current is high, in the region of tens of kA. The self-induced magnetic field acts on the ions moving in the electric field creating the discharge to create a Lorentz body force that accelerates the plasma. Teflon PPTs have enjoyed limited use in east-west station keeping and sun pointing applications. PPTs do not produce sufficient thrust to be considered as candidates to provide primary propulsion of future out of Earth orbit missions and were not considered for SMART-1. 2, record 63, English, - pulsed%20plasma%20thruster

The principle underlying Acoustic Impact Testing is simple. The sound produced when a structure is tapped is mainly at the frequencies of major structural modes of vibration, which are structural properties. Any difference in the sound is necessarily due to modification affected to the force input by the defect in the structure. The satellite's integral propulsion system uses monomethyl hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide bipropellant carried in four spherical titanium tanks. A single 490-newton(110-pound force) thruster is used for perigee augmentation and apogee burns, and thirteen 22-newton(5-pound force) thrusters are used for attitude control and stationkeeping maneuvers. Highly accurate antenna pointing control is provided by independent beacon tracking on each of the Ku-band reflector systems. The attitude control system uses an innovative combination of double-gimballed momentum wheels and magnetic field torquing, which minimizes the need for thruster use during normal on-station operations. 3, record 77, English, - double%2Dgimballed%20momentum%20wheel
