It consists of one or two electrodes which either rotate in an electrostatic field or become periodically exposed to a field by rotating vanes. It can be used on the ground to gain information about the field aloft, or it can be flown on an airplane or balloon. In a collaborative project with the Canadian Space Agency, two vibration isolation systems for zero-g environments have been developed-the Motion Isolation Mount(MIM) for orbital flights and the Large Motion Isolation Mount(LMIM) for parabolic flights. The approach taken for MIM has been to develop a mechanism having two parts : a stator attached to the structure and a payload-carrying flotor, with the only coupling between the two components being a flexible umbilical carrying signals and power to the flotor. The flotor is actively magnetically levitated by a set of wide-gap voice coil actuators. Its position relative to the stator is sensed by an optical position sensor while its absolute acceleration is sensed by an inertial accelerometer system. A digital controller uses the sensed information to compute actuator currents based on a control law that regulates acceleration and steady-state position to zero. The weak coupling between stator and flotor and the insensitivity of actuator force with position makes such a system extremely effective for vibration isolation...

Rate gyroscopes provide a means for measuring angular rate about a particular axis and are traditionally used in a variety of high accuracy control and guidance systems in aircraft, missiles and ships. The conventional rate gyro, based on a high speed rotor, is a mature but relatively complex, delicate and expensive product. For these reasons and the increasing market for less expensive devices, a great deal of research effort has been invested into the development of a rate gyro with a vibrating sensitive element, which would eliminate the need for ball bearing suspensions and hence reduce the mechanical complexity and cost whilst greatly increasing life and robustness. The principle of operation of these devices is based on the coriolis force, which couples together two degenerate modes of vibration of the sensitive element when the sensor rotates.

Our researchers have exploited the extremely sensitive quantum tunneling effect between metals to design MEMS sensors that can sense a force applied to a silicon-based, surface micromachined structure with extraordinary sensitivity and six orders of magnitude of dynamic range. The force is applied to a micromachined cantilever(one electrode) and is sensed as a result of a tunneling current produced between the cantilever and a tunneling tip(the other electrode). The sensor is operated in a force rebalance mode such that the cantilever and tip do not actually move with respect to each other but are held in a servo-locked state with the voltage required to maintain the servo-lock proportional to the force being sensed by the cantilever.
