Synthetic gene drives are a new form of genetic engineering that overcomes the normal rules of inheritance, and which may allow the deliberate eradication or modification of species and populations in the wild. Gene drives distort the process of inheritance so that the probability of particular genes—and thus specific traits—being passed on is increased substantially above the usual 50%(known as the Mendelian rule of inheritance). Over the course of several generations, genes with higher inheritance rates will rapidly spread through a breeding population... Thus, in theory at least, a gene drive can be employed to force genetic changes into an entire population. 4, record 6, English, - synthetic%20gene%20drive
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 OBS
gene drive: In English, a differentiation is sometimes made between a synthetic gene drive, a bioengineered process, and a natural gene drive, a natural process of inheritance. Consequently, it may be preferable to use the designations "synthetic gene drive" and "engineered gene drive" when referring to the bioengineered process. 5, record 6, English, - synthetic%20gene%20drive

3, record 16, French, - distillation%20membranaire

Jet dyeing is a process that can be used for batch dyeing operations such as dyeing, bleaching, washing and rinsing. In this process, dyeing is accomplished in a closed tubular system, basically composed of an impeller pump and a shallow dye bath. The fabric to be dyed is loosely collapsed in a form of a rope, and tied into a loop. The impeller pump supplies a jet of dye solution, propelled by water and/or air, to force the fabric to move through the tube into the shallow bath. Turbulence created by the jet aids in dye penetration and prevents the fabric from touching the walls of the tube, thus minimizing mechanical impact on the fabric. 1, record 19, English, - jet%20dyeing

… hydrodynamic effect means the result of water in motion. On vessels of any size, but especially on large vessels, as the boat moves through the water the friction of the water on the bow and on the hull causes the water to create turbulence. ... channeling is a problem specific to pool sand filters. When the sand(or crushed glass) media captures enough material that changes its physical properties, [the] sand's ability to screen particles out of water is reduced. It creates uneven pressure spots where water is trying to force its way through the media. Eventually, these uneven pressure spots in the filter can form an opening, called a channel. When the channel opens up enough, unfiltered water can flow through it and bypass the majority of the sand.... Cloudy pool water is almost inevitable at that point. 3, record 37, English, - channelled%20filter

As an airfoil moves through the atmosphere in sustained flight, an area of high pressure is created beneath it and an area of low pressure is created above it. The air flowing from the high-pressure area to the low-pressure area around and about the tips of the airfoil tends to roll up into two rapidly rotating vortices, cylindrical in shape. These vortices are the predominant parts of aircraft wake turbulence and their rotational force is dependent upon the wing loading, gross weight, and speed of the generating aircraft. The vortices from medium to heavy aircraft can be of extremely high velocity and hazardous to smaller aircraft. 4, record 39, English, - wing%2Dtip%20vortex

5, record 39, French, - tourbillon%20en%20bout%20d%27aile

All helicopters incorporate a one-way clutch system that allows the rotor blades to continue to rotate under the effects of inertia and autogiro-type flight in the event of engine failure.... the flow of the airstream through the helicopter rotor disk is reversed. The force of gravity continues the operation of the rotor blade, thereby reducing the rate of descent and allowing a successful emergency landing. Because of the time required to effect this change and the necessity for other flight maneuvers, these characteristics led to the development of a restricted area of operations of the helicopter known as the deadman's curve, bounding that area of height and speed in which the helicopter should not be operated. 1, record 43, English, - deadman%27s%20curve

In 1990, a new Aboriginal Employment and Training Strategy called "Pathways to Success" was established. It guarantees that aboriginal human resource development activities are delivered, managed and controlled by aboriginal people. Central to the strategy are local, regional and national aboriginal management boards, through which aboriginal people are in the forefront of policy decisions regarding the development of a trained aboriginal labour force for participation in unique aboriginal labour markets and in broader Canadian labour market. 2, record 49, English, - Pathways%20to%20Success

2, record 49, French, - Les%20chemins%20de%20la%20r%C3%A9ussite

CFC began in 1981 in Manila when a local Christian community tried a new approach in evangelizing married couples. The method used consisted of bringing together a small group of prospective couples in a private home.... Soon, CFC became a Christian family life renewal program made available to parishes and groups of married couples who wished to live out their Christian life in an active supportive relationship with one another. Through the years, CFC has blossomed into a worldwide ministry, becoming a major force for the renewal of the Christian family life and also of the church. 3, record 53, English, - Couples%20For%20Christ

The Public Prosecution Service of Canada(PPSC) is a federal government organization, created on December 12, 2006, when the Director of Public Prosecutions Act, Part 3 of the Federal Accountability Act, came into force. The PPSC fulfills the responsibilities of the Attorney General of Canada in the discharge of his criminal law mandate by prosecuting criminal offences under federal jurisdiction and by contributing to strengthening the criminal justice system. In this regard, the PPSC assumes the role played within the Department of Justice Canada by the former Federal Prosecution Service(FPS), and takes on additional responsibilities for prosecuting new fraud offences under the Financial Administration Act as well as offences under the Canada Elections Act. Unlike the FPS, which was part of the Department of Justice, the PPSC is an independent organization, reporting to Parliament through the Attorney General of Canada. 1, record 66, English, - Public%20Prosecution%20Service%20of%20Canada

Once a diesel engine is running, the engine speed is monitored and controlled through a governor. The governor ensures that the engine speed stays high enough to idle at the right speed and that the engine speed will not rise too high when full power is demanded. The governor is a simple mechanical device which first appeared on steam engines.... The governor consists of a rotating shaft, which is driven by the diesel engine. A pair of flyweights are linked to the shaft and they rotate as it rotates. The centrifugal force caused by the rotation causes the weights to be thrown outwards as the speed of the shaft rises. If the speed falls the weights move inwards. The flyweights are linked to a collar fitted around the shaft by a pair of arms. As the weights move out, so the collar rises on the shaft. If the weights move inwards, the collar moves down the shaft. The movement of the collar is used to operate the fuel rack lever controlling the amount of fuel supplied to the engine by the injectors. 2, record 67, English, - governor

Laser force microscope senses topography by moving a tungsten or silicon probe across a sample(typically a microelectronic component) at a height of a few nanometers. The tip is set vibrating at close to its resonance frequency. Attractive forces... called van der Waals attractions and the surface tension of water that condenses between tip and sample, pull on the tip, changing its resonance frequency and so reducing its vibration amplitude. The variation in the forces, and hence in tip travel, reveals surface relief. A laser probe tracks the tip by means of a beam that is split into two. One of the beams is reflected through a stationary prism; the other passes through a Bragg cell--a device that shifts the beam's frequency--and is reflected from the back of the probe. The beams are recombined, and their interference produces a signal(at the Bragg-cell frequency) that measures the tip vibration. 1, record 70, English, - laser%20force%20microscope

Overflows... have been designed for delicate knitted and woven fabrics made of natural and synthetic fibres. They are also found in the carpet sector. The main difference between jet and overflow machines remains in the fact that in jet machines the fabric is transported by the bath flowing at high speed through the nozzle, while with overflows the fabric is transported by the gravitational force of the liquor overflow. A winch(usually not motor driven) is located in the upper part of the machine and the fabric hangs over it. A longer length of textile hangs from the exit side of the winch than from the inlet side. Gravitational forces pull the longer length of textile downward more strongly than the shorter. The fabric is therefore soaked in the bath without any tension(transportation is very gentle). 1, record 71, English, - overflow%20machine

We present a novel technique in which a reflection scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) is used for direct writing of nano-scale patterns into hydrogen-passivated silicon surfaces. The reflection SNOM is operated as a combined shear-force/near-field microscope enabling simultaneous imaging of topographical and optical properties with subwavelength resolution. ... Beside high resolution optical imaging (<50 nm) and patterning of hydrogen-passivated silicon surfaces, the SNOM can also be used for transferring nano-scale patterns into ordinary photo resist with a typical resolution of 50-100 nm. The SNOM thereby overcomes the far-field diffraction limit of conventional photolithography. 5, record 73, English, - scanning%20near%2Dfield%20optical%20microscope

Disc brakes stay much cleaner than drum brakes. A disc brake is partly shrouded by the wheel, but it is largely exposed to circulating air. The net-bearer bond, or jalandhara bandha, is considered a very important bond for breath retention in yoga. It is believed to stop prana, or life force, from basically leaking out of the upper body. By blocking this area, the prana can move energy through the spine and rid the area of unwanted or unneeded stuff, for lack of a better word. When this bandha is released, all the energy that was held in this area will rush to the head, sparking your creativity and mental power. 6, record 89, English, - chin%20lock

The cockpit clearview windows are plug-type windows that rest against a flange around the perimeter of the sill. Each window can be moved through a crank-and-chain mechanism located on the bulkhead below the windowsill. To open the window, the locking mechanism is first released by the pilot. This preliminary action releases the latches on the aft edge of the window, but does not move the window. The initial turning of the hand crank pulls the aft edge of the window inboard enough to clear the sill, allowing the window to slide aft when the crank is further turned. The window can be unlocked when the aircraft is pressurized, but the outward force on the window is so great that turning the hand crank cannot open the window. 3, record 96, English, - sliding%20window

2, record 96, French, - fen%C3%AAtre%20coulissante

In astrophysics, weakly interacting massive particles or WIMPs, are hypothetical particles serving as one possible solution to the dark matter problem. These particles interact through the weak nuclear force and gravity, and possibly through other interactions no stronger than the weak force. Because they do not interact with electromagnetism they cannot be seen directly, and because they do not interact with the strong nuclear force they do not react strongly with atomic nuclei. This combination of properties gives WIMPs many of the properties of neutrinos, save for being far more massive and therefore slower. 4, record 98, English, - weakly%20interacting%20massive%20particle

5, record 98, French, - mauviette
