If material is to be brought together to form structures then a long-range force is required, and gravity is the only known possibility.... On October 20, 2000, Prime Minister and the Federal Transport Minister, together with the Premier of Ontario, and the Mayor of Toronto, announced the Government of Canada commitment of $500 million to fund the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization with a priority to projects required for the Olympic and Paralympic bid. The province of Ontario and City of Toronto committed equal amounts. The Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation, chaired by Robert Fung, has been established to begin the implementation of this initiative. Mr. Fung led the task force that designed a plan to revive Toronto's waterfront.

Civil war erupted in the Dominican Republic in 1965, and to protect American civilians the United States landed 12, 000 troops. These were joined by 1, 700 soldiers from six Latin American countries, under the auspices of the Organization of American States(OAS), and together they formed the Inter-American Peace Force. At the urging of the UN Security Council, the Secretary General sent a representative, José Mayobne of Venzuela, to the Dominican Republic to report on the matter. He was accompanied by three observers, one of which was Canadian.

Between 1972 and 1977 several studies confirmed the hypothesis that air pollutants could travel several thousands of kilometres before deposition and damage occurred. This also implied that cooperation at the international level was necessary to solve problems such as acidification. In response to these acute problems, a High-level Meeting within the Framework of the ECE on the Protection of the Environment was held at ministerial level in November 1979 in Geneva. It resulted in the signature of the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution by 34 Governments and the European Community(EC). The Convention was the first international legally binding instrument to deal with problems of air pollution on a broad regional basis. Besides laying down the general principles of international cooperation for air pollution abatement, the Convention sets up an institutional framework bringing together research and policy. The Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution entered into force in 1983. It has been extended by eight specific protocols.

Rate gyroscopes provide a means for measuring angular rate about a particular axis and are traditionally used in a variety of high accuracy control and guidance systems in aircraft, missiles and ships. The conventional rate gyro, based on a high speed rotor, is a mature but relatively complex, delicate and expensive product. For these reasons and the increasing market for less expensive devices, a great deal of research effort has been invested into the development of a rate gyro with a vibrating sensitive element, which would eliminate the need for ball bearing suspensions and hence reduce the mechanical complexity and cost whilst greatly increasing life and robustness. The principle of operation of these devices is based on the coriolis force, which couples together two degenerate modes of vibration of the sensitive element when the sensor rotates.

Inertia welding (friction welding) has become a viable production welding method for parts having radial symmetry such as compressor drums. In this process, the metal preparation procedures are the same as for other techniques. The essence of the method is to convert rotational kinetic energy into heat to bring about controlled degrees of fusion and extrusion. Inertia welding can be done in air.

Intertia friction welding. Two workpiece parts to be joined are clamped rigidly in a sturdy fixed unit usually called the tailstock fixture and a rotating chuck assembly or collet drive. The spindle assembly, which includes one of the workpieces and any required flywheels, is rapidly accelerated to a pre-calculated speed, storing the energy required for welding. The spindle is disconnected from the drive source and begins to freewheel. At the same time, the ram assembly moves the non-rotating part axially to force both workpieces together, also a predetermined calculated(lbs.) thrust load. While the workpieces are thrust tightly together, friction between the interfaces convert kinetic energy stored in the rotating spindle and flywheel assemblies into heat at the interface, and finally into mechanical working of the plastic metals.

Aircraft Rivets.... For dimpling heavier skins or skins of some of the harder alloys, such as 7075, hot dimpling may be used. This is usually done in the [coin dimpling] manner.... The dies are held in a special squeezer that allows electrical current to flow through the sheet for an accurately measured period of time. This current causes the metal immediately around the dies to heat up, and then air pressure is applied to force the dies together. Rather than the male die being driven into the female, the female die is forced up around the male, causing the hot metal to flow up tighter around the male die, forming a dimple with closer tolerance than that formed with the radius method.

The United States and Thailand are among the signatories of the 1954 Manila pact of the former Southeast Asia Treaty Organization(SEATO). Article IV(1) of this treaty provides that, in the event of armed attack in the treaty area(which includes Thailand), each member would "act to meet the common danger in accordance with its constitutional processes". Despite the dissolution of the SEATO in 1997, the Manila pact remains in force and, together with the Thanat-Rusk communique of 1962, constitutes the basis of U. S. security commitments to Thailand. Project Ploughshares, a task force on disarmament and development, was founded in 1976. The organization held is first meeting at Friends House in Toronto. At the same time that this meeting brought together members of the historic peace churches(Mennonites, Dukhobors, Quakers and Bretheren), the Canadian Council of Churches had started another program, which they called Canadian Defence Alternatives. The two groups were merged, and eventually took the name Project Ploughshares. Today, the organization, sponsored by the Canadian Council of Churches, development agencies and others, is established in Waterloo, Ontario.

The International Solar Polar Mission(ISPM) is a joint ESA/NASA venture in which two spacecraft, one developed by ESA and the other developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL) acting for NASA, are launched together in February 1983, using the Space Shuttle and the Inertial Upper Stage Rocket. Their trajectories will take them out of the ecliptic plane to regions of space hitherto unexplored on paths that will overfly the poles of the Sun after using Jupiter's high gravity as an accelerating force to throw them out of the ecliptic plane. Two solar polar passes will be made, the mission ending in September 1987... The aim of the mission is to make simultaneous studies by both spacecraft of the solar wind and energetic emissions at solar latitudes above 70 degrees where the flow of fields and particles is essentially radial to the Sun and relatively simple in structure.
