If the earth were not rotating, the wind would blow exclusively from high to low pressure. Close to the earth, it would be slowed by friction between the atmosphere and the earth's surface but would maintain the same direction with height. However, since the earth undergoes rotation, there is an apparent force acting on horizontal atmospheric motions when examined from a point of reference on the earth's surface. For example, [as] viewed from space(the absolute frame of reference), the [wind] flow [continues] in a straight line. However, as viewed from the earth, the flow has undergone an apparent deflection to the right. 3, record 4, English, - horizontal%20atmospheric%20motion

When the "haul in" signal is given on the docking telegraph …, the operator pulls on the slack end of the rope that is wound loosely round the drum of the winch. This tightens the rope slightly on the drum and it grips the surface. The amount of tension on the free end of the rope is multiplied several hundred times and the resulting force is enough to move the entire ship, pulling it into the correct position. The [captain] signals with the docking telegraph or a hand held radio to tell the winch operator what to do and, by heaving in and paying out the ropes at each end of the ship, she can be positioned in exactly the right place regardless of the wind and waves. 1, record 7, English, - docking%20telegraph

The tipsails are an extension of NASA [National Aeronautics and Space Administration] technology which led to the application of small winglets on many airplanes... Tipsails operate in the rotational flow field of the wing tip vortex, giving an effect similar to the sail of a boat as it moves into the wind. The force vector produced by the pressure differential between the two surfaces is directed forward, which results in a cruise drag reduction. Rudders, located at the trailing edge of the tipsails, provide directional control without requiring a special surface dedicated solely to that purpose. 4, record 24, English, - winglet

Dynamic stall is a non-linear unsteady aerodynamic effect that occurs when aerofoils rapidly change the angle of attack. The rapid change can cause a strong vortex to be shed from the leading edge of the aerofoil, and travel backwards above the wing. The vortex, containing high velocity airflows, briefly increases the lift produced by the wing. As soon as it passes behind the trailing edge, however, the lift reduces dramatically, and the wing is in normal stall. 5, record 25, English, - aerodynamic%20stall

The Dines Pressure Tube Anemometer is universally recognised as the most reliable and accurate instrument of its kind and has been adopted as standard by the British Meteorological Office and by meteorological stations world-wide. Dines Pressure Tube Anemometer consists essentially of a Head Assembly, a Velocity Recorder and a Direction Recorder, the IM100 records wind speed and wind direction simultaneously on a single chart. An important feature of the Dines, is that it records not only average wind velocity over a given time, but also variations in wind force, with the strength and frequency of gusts, providing valuable data on the internal structure of the wind. 2, record 58, English, - Dines%20anemometer

The suction head is mounted concentrically with the shaft, near the bearing that supports the vane, and develops a suction that is independent of wind direction. The pressure difference between the suction head and the pressure head is proportional to the square root of the wind speed and is measured by a specially designed float manometer with a linear wind scale. 3, record 58, English, - Dines%20anemometer

The Dines anemometer was first described by William Henry Dines in 1892 and had all the essentials of the final form of the pressure-tube anemometer. With various modifications, the Dines anemometer remained a useful wind measuring device into the 1960s. 3, record 58, English, - Dines%20anemometer

Generally, the greater the wind speed then the greater the surface ocean current speed. The wind force acting on the surface of ocean is called wind stress and denoted by Tau. Wind stress acts in the direction of the wind on the surface. In contrast, pressure acts perpendicular to the surface.... Wind stress [(tau) ] is a force per unit area. [tau]=mass[ star]: acceleration/area. Units should be kg[ star]:/s²·/m²(Newton=kg[ star]: m/s²). So [tau] is in Newton/m². All magnetic objects produce invisible lines of force that extend between the poles of the object. An easy way to visualize this is to spread iron filings on a sheet of paper and place a bar magnet under the paper. The iron filings will arrange themselves around the magnet and along the magnetic field lines. In the simplest terms, Earth can be thought of as a dipole(2-pole) magnet. Magnetic field lines radiate between Earth's north and south magnetic poles just as they do between the poles of a bar magnet. Charged particles become trapped on these field lines(just as the iron filings are trapped), forming the magnetosphere. Earth's magnetic field lines are not as symmetrical as those of the bar magnet. The impact of the solar wind causes the lines facing sunward to compress, while the field lines facing away from the Sun stream back to form Earth's magnetotail. The magnetosphere extends into the vacuum of space from approximately 80 to 60, 000 kilometers(50 to 37, 280 miles) on the side toward the Sun, and trails out more than 300, 000 kilometers(186, 500 miles) away from the Sun. 4, record 63, English, - Earth%27s%20magnetic%20field

The description of wind speeds is an example of the use of the Weibull distribution to describe natural phenomena. Each part of the planet has it's own parameters for a Weibull distribution to describe the wind speed pattern in that place. On the basis of that you can calculate the number of days a year, or hours a day, with wind speeds above a certain force, or the mean wind speed, or the median wind speed, halve the days in a year have a wind speed below the median force, halve the days above. The Weibull distribution is very practical in this area because the distribution doesn’t allow for negative value's and it is easy to appropriately consider the fact that on most days there will be a bit of wind, on some days a lot and you have those days that there is way too much wind speed. 3, record 75, English, - median%20wind%20speed

There is one other indicator that the earth is rotating in space. The fact that low pressure regions spin with an anticlockwise motion in the Southern hemisphere, yet in the Northern hemisphere(the high pressure regions) spin with an anticlockwise motion and vice versa raises the question as to what force is being exerted on these winds. Studies of rotating bodies show there is an apparent Coriolis acceleration, which acts sideways on moving objects. Only a Coriolis type acceleration seems to explain the earth's winds and this could only occur if the earth rotates. The fact that the wind direction is always constant is evidence of the earth's consistent rotation. 2, record 76, English, - apparent%20Coriolis%20acceleration

A stationary and non-accelerating flow is described with du/dt=dv/dt=0. With this,(7-3) becomes a set of differential equations for u, v whose solution yields the Ekman spiral. However, if we are not interested in accurate solutions and consider one layer only, we can see the meaning of the friction force as first shown by C. M. Guldberg and H. Mohn in 1883. The wind profile near the earth's surface is usually convex, if represented on a graph with wind speed versus height. The wind speed increases from zero at the earth's surface to significant values near the anemometer level, and further increase of wind speed with height continues at a slower rate. In this situation, the second derivatives of u and v may be assumed proportional to-u and-v, respectively : 2, record 82, English, - anemometer%20level

The International Solar Polar Mission(ISPM) is a joint ESA/NASA venture in which two spacecraft, one developed by ESA and the other developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL) acting for NASA, are launched together in February 1983, using the Space Shuttle and the Inertial Upper Stage Rocket. Their trajectories will take them out of the ecliptic plane to regions of space hitherto unexplored on paths that will overfly the poles of the Sun after using Jupiter's high gravity as an accelerating force to throw them out of the ecliptic plane. Two solar polar passes will be made, the mission ending in September 1987... The aim of the mission is to make simultaneous studies by both spacecraft of the solar wind and energetic emissions at solar latitudes above 70 degrees where the flow of fields and particles is essentially radial to the Sun and relatively simple in structure. 1, record 88, English, - International%20Solar%20Polar%20Mission
