  • Air Conditioning and Heating
  • Cooling and Ventilating Systems
DEF

A forced circulation air cooler wherein heat transfer is not implemented by a liquid spray while in operation.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Conditionnement de l'air et chauffage
  • Systèmes de refroidissement et de ventilation
DEF

Refroidisseur d'air à circulation forcée dans lequel l'échange thermique se fait au moyen d'une batterie froide [...] sans pulvérisation ni ruissellement d'un liquide.

Record 3 2003-09-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

A gentle wind blowing up a valley or mountain slope in the absence of cyclonic or anticyclonic winds, caused by the warming of the mountainside and valley floor by the sun.

CONT

A valley breeze develops during the day as the sun heats the land surface and air at the valley bottom and sides... As the air heats it becomes less dense and buoyant and begins to flow gently up the valley sides. Vertical ascent of the air rising along the sides of the mountain is usually limited by the presence of a temperature inversion layer. When the ascending air currents encounter the inversion they are forced to move horizontally and then back down to the valley floor. This creates a self-contained circulation system. If conditions are right, the rising air can condense and form into cumuliform clouds.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

Record 4 2002-11-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Measurements and Analyses
  • Soil Science
  • Soil Mechanics (Engineering)
CONT

The pore space of aggregated soils may be represented by a similar scheme, where interaggregate (structural) pores are modeled as triangular cross sections, and intra-aggregate (textural) pore space is represented by the unit cell introduced for the matrix pore space above ... Matrix and structural pore spaces are assumed to be in equilibrium, with flow occurring perpendicular to the cross sections (flow pathways in matrix and structural pores are assumed to be parallel).

CONT

Soils can be contaminated either naturally by volatilization and diffusion, or provoked by the forced circulation of air. Transfers of gaseous ammonia and radon-222 are more useful for analysing aerated soils where the structural pore space plays a predominant role.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Mesures et analyse (Sciences)
  • Science du sol
  • Mécanique des sols
CONT

La porosité structurale correspond aux espaces situés entre les agrégats du sol et susceptible de varier largement dans le temps, en fonction notamment des façons culturales.

DEF

A wall furnace is a self-contained, vented appliance that can be attached to or recessed into a wall. It may utilize either gravity circulation or forced air circulation. It is not ducted and is designed to heat the space adjacent to the wall on which it is mounted.

Record 7 1990-09-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Heating
CONT

Gravity furnaces have the air passages through the casing and over the heat exchanger more generously proportioned so that the buoyancy force created by the air being warmed furnishes the motive power to circulate the air through the ducts. Floor furnaces are a variation of the gravity furnace and are designed to fit flush with the floor and distribute the heated air directly into the living area. Models that incorporate a means of forced air circulation are available.
