FORCED EXPIRATION [5 records]

Record 1 2013-12-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Symptoms (Medicine)
DEF

Bulging of interspaces may occur in a massive pleural effusion, tension pneumothorax, and frequently is seen during the forced expiration of the patient with emphysema or asthma. Occasionally, bulging may be noted in the thoracic wall as the result of tumor, aortic aneurysm, or marked cardiac enlargement in infancy and childhood.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Symptômes (Médecine)
DEF

Record 2 2009-08-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Respiratory System
CONT

Forced expiration is caused by the contraction of the internal intercostals and the abdominal muscles. The internal intercostal muscles are between the ribs, located deep to the external intercostal muscles. The internal intercostals push the chest down further and the abdominal muscles push against the diaphragm. This helps force even more air out of the lungs than quiet expiration alone.

CONT

[The researchers] evaluated in infants the rate of emptying during forced expiration from near total lung capacity to residual volume. [They] have demonstrated that the rate of emptying during forced expiration decreases during lung growth early in life.

Domaine(s)
  • Appareil respiratoire
DEF
