An improved technology in utilizing solar energy for drying grain is the use of solar driers where the air is heated in a solar collector and then passed through beds of grain. There are two basic types of solar drier appropriate for use with grain : natural convection driers where the air flow is induced by thermal gradients; and forced convection driers wherein air is forced through a solar collector and the grain bed by a fan.

CONT

Psychrometer: An instrument designed for determining the relative humidity. ... A non-ventilated psychrometer relies on the natural movement of air for ventilation, whereas a ventilated psychrometer relies on artificially circulated air (eg sling psychrometer).

OBS

The dry and wet bulb temperatures are measured using psychrometers. Most common are those using two mercury thermometers, one of them having the bulb covered with a wick saturated with distilled water, and which measures a temperature lowered due to the evaporative cooling. When they are naturally ventilated inside a shelter, problems can arise if air flow is not sufficient to maintain an appropriate evaporation rate and associated cooling. Subject field(s)
  • Respiratory System
CONT

Forced inspiration is caused by the contraction of muscles in the upper chest, such as the sternocleidomastoids & scalenes. These muscles pull the chest up and out even more, further decreasing the intrapleural pressure so that even more air will rush into the lungs to fill the void.

CONT

In a healthy subject everything works together to create large flows during a forced inspiration : 1 The greater the inspiratory force applied, the lower the alveolar pressure relative to pressure at the mouth, and the larger the flow into the lung. 2 During a forced inspiration the(subatmospheric) pleural pressure outside intrathoracic airways is lower than bronchial pressure. The pressure difference is largest at the thoracic outlet and smallest in small intrapulmonary airways. Hence large intrathoracic airways... are subjected to a considerable distending force, and this helps in generating high inspiratory flows.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Appareil respiratoire
CONT

Vaned diffusers are used where importance is attached to the highest possible efficiency. By means of deflecting vanes in the diffuser guiding the flow in the radial direction, the velocity of the fluid can be reduced more than with a vaneless diffuser. In addition, the flow path through the forced deflection is shortened. Higher efficiencies and more compact geometries are obtained. Nevertheless, vaned diffusers also have disadvantages compared with vaneless ones : if the flow rate for a given vaned diffuser is much above the design flow rate, the profile losses increase considerably due to the high incidence angle. The efficiency then falls so steeply that operation is no longer purposeful.

DEF

A gentle wind blowing up a valley or mountain slope in the absence of cyclonic or anticyclonic winds, caused by the warming of the mountainside and valley floor by the sun.

CONT

A valley breeze develops during the day as the sun heats the land surface and air at the valley bottom and sides... As the air heats it becomes less dense and buoyant and begins to flow gently up the valley sides. Vertical ascent of the air rising along the sides of the mountain is usually limited by the presence of a temperature inversion layer. When the ascending air currents encounter the inversion they are forced to move horizontally and then back down to the valley floor. This creates a self-contained circulation system. If conditions are right, the rising air can condense and form into cumuliform clouds.

Aircraft Rivets.... For dimpling heavier skins or skins of some of the harder alloys, such as 7075, hot dimpling may be used. This is usually done in the [coin dimpling] manner.... The dies are held in a special squeezer that allows electrical current to flow through the sheet for an accurately measured period of time. This current causes the metal immediately around the dies to heat up, and then air pressure is applied to force the dies together. Rather than the male die being driven into the female, the female die is forced up around the male, causing the hot metal to flow up tighter around the male die, forming a dimple with closer tolerance than that formed with the radius method.

The three basic types [of forced air furnace] are upflow, counter flow and horizontal, and there are several variations depending on the actual installation.... Among the principal types [of forced-air furnaces] used for residences and small buildings the following arrangements are common :... High-boy arrangement with up-flow of air, in which the blower is located at the bottom of the casing and the heat exchanger is located at the top.... High-boy arrangement with down-flow of air, in which the blower is located at the top of the casing and the heat exchanger is located below the blower.

Furnace in which the circulating air flows upward, discharging at or near the top of the casing.

CONT

The upflow or high-boy furnace has the blower beneath the heat exchanger discharging vertically upward. Air enters through the bottom or the side of the blower compartment and leaves at the top. Such furnaces may be used in closets and utility rooms on the first floor of homes or in basements with the return air ducted down to the blower compartment entrance.

OBS

Furnaces for forced air systems are available in various designs.... In addition, each is usually classified in terms of the direction in which the air is delivered. The three basic types are upflow, counter flow and horizontal, and there are several variations depending on the actual installation.

OBS

Oil furnaces. Indoor oil furnaces... are available in upflow, downflow, horizontal and low-boy configurations for ducted systems. They are also available as floor furnaces, wall furnaces, and free standing space heaters. Oil-fired outdoor furnaces and combination units are rare.... The ducted system, oil-fired, forced air furnaces are usually equipped with pressure-atomizing burners. The pump pressure and the orifice size of the injection nozzle regulate the firing rate of the furnace. Electric ignition is used to ignite the burners.... The combustion chamber and heat exchanger of oil-fired furnaces are normally formed as a common single chamber. It is formed from heavy gage steel into a welded assembly. The hot flue products flow through the inside of the heat exchanger into the chimney. The conditioned air flows over the outside of the heat exchanger and into the air supply plenum.

OBS
