FORCED HOT AIR [6 records]

Record 1 2010-11-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Pipes and Fittings
  • HVAC Distribution Systems
DEF

A passageway made of sheet metal or other suitable material, not necessarily leaktight, used for conveying air or other gas at low pressures.

CONT

Duct. ... metal pipes ... round or rectangular in shape, for distributing warm air from the heating plant to the various rooms, or for conveying air from air-conditioning devices.

CONT

Forced air systems(heating)... As the hot air is delivered through the ducts and into the room through the supply outlet, cooler air from the space(room) is being returned through return grilles, into ducts and back through the central heating unit to be heated and sent back to the space. The ducts may be circular or rectangular, and their size depends on the amount of heated air which must flow through them to maintain the desired temperature of the room.

Domaine(s)
  • Tuyauterie et raccords
  • Distribution et évacuation (chauffage et conditionnement d'air)
DEF

DEF

[A] machine used for washing wool after carding to remove all impurities [and to dry] the tops after washing by passing them over steam-heated cylinders, or perforated cylinders through which hot air is forced.

OBS

This machine usually consists of two small washing or scouring tanks, drying cylinders, and a straightening gill-box. It is made in several forms, for each type certain constructional advantages or advantages for the material treated being claimed. It is employed either before or after combing to thoroughly clean worsted slivers or "tops," for not only does the wool become sullied in passing through the several preparing machines, but impurities which cannot be extracted in the scouring bowls have revealed themselves and may here be conveniently got rid of. The process of "blueing" to give a white appearance to the slivers or tops is frequently resorted to, and is usually affected on the backwasher. The latest innovation in this machine is the adoption of hot air drying in place of cylinder drying.

DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Riveting (Metals)
  • Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance
CONT

Aircraft Rivets.... For dimpling heavier skins or skins of some of the harder alloys, such as 7075, hot dimpling may be used. This is usually done in the [coin dimpling] manner.... The dies are held in a special squeezer that allows electrical current to flow through the sheet for an accurately measured period of time. This current causes the metal immediately around the dies to heat up, and then air pressure is applied to force the dies together. Rather than the male die being driven into the female, the female die is forced up around the male, causing the hot metal to flow up tighter around the male die, forming a dimple with closer tolerance than that formed with the radius method.

OBS

hot dimpling: term standardized by ISO.

Subject field(s)
  • Ovens, Furnaces and Boilers (Heating)
CONT

Oil furnaces. Indoor oil furnaces... are available in upflow, downflow, horizontal and low-boy configurations for ducted systems. They are also available as floor furnaces, wall furnaces, and free standing space heaters. Oil-fired outdoor furnaces and combination units are rare.... The ducted system, oil-fired, forced air furnaces are usually equipped with pressure-atomizing burners. The pump pressure and the orifice size of the injection nozzle regulate the firing rate of the furnace. Electric ignition is used to ignite the burners.... The combustion chamber and heat exchanger of oil-fired furnaces are normally formed as a common single chamber. It is formed from heavy gage steel into a welded assembly. The hot flue products flow through the inside of the heat exchanger into the chimney. The conditioned air flows over the outside of the heat exchanger and into the air supply plenum.

  • Fours et chaudières (Chauffage)
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ovens, Furnaces and Boilers (Heating)
CONT

Forced Air Wood Furnaces. Central wood-burning furnaces are controlled by a wall mounted thermostat in the living area. Temperature and fan controls are the same as those found on oil and gas furnaces. Unlike room heaters, which produce a steady heat output by periodic manual adjustments of the draft control, most wood furnaces operate in cycles. A cycle starts with the thermostat sensing that heat is needed in the room where it is located. It signals the furnace control system which opens the combustion air damper and a hot fire develops. When the air inside the furnace's sheet metal casing gets hot, a preset fan control starts the circulating blower and the warm air is moved through the ducts to all areas of the house.
