The term "even keel" is a nautical term used to describe a ship's position in the water. When a ship is on an even keel, it means that the draft of the vessel is equal fore and aft. In simpler terms, the ship's keel is parallel to the waterline, which allows the vessel to float or proceed in a smooth and level manner. An even keel is an essential aspect of safe navigation for any vessel. If a ship is not on an even keel, it can lead to listing, which is when the ship leans to one side or the other due to uneven weight distribution.

Squat refers to the increase of a ship's draught as a result of its motion through water. It is a hydraulic phenomenon whereby the water displaced creates an increase in current velocity past the moving hull causing a reduction in pressure resulting in a localised reduction of the water level and, consequently, in a settling of the vessel deeper in the water. For various reasons-having to do with hull design, trim and other physical and operational factors-squat may be different at the fore and aft.

Il avait été imaginé un conservateur de cap installé dans une Renault 4L qui stationnait près du bureau de piste. Avant chaque départ en mission la 4L était utilisée pour caler la centrale gyroscopique du Mirage IV au moyen du gyro de transfert prévu à cet effet dans son coffre. The most common current wing design is the cantilever. A single large beam, called the main spar, runs through the wing, typically nearer the leading edge at about 25 percent of the total chord. In flight, the wings generate lift, and the wing spars are designed to carry this load through the fuselage to the other wing. To resist fore and aft movement, the wing will usually be fitted with a second smaller drag-spar nearer the trailing edge, tied to the main spar with structural elements or a stressed skin. The wing must also resist twisting forces, done either by a monocoque "D" tube structure forming the leading edge, or by the aforementioned linking two spars in some form of box beam or lattice girder structure.

A ship that has experienced hogging is said to be hogged. Instead of showing a flat, level hull line, a hogged ship is "curved", with the bow and stern lower than the center of the ship.

Hogging occurs because the bow and stern of the ship, while carrying a considerable amount of heavy equipment, possesses relatively little buoyancy. The center of the ship, on the other hand, possesses a great deal of buoyancy and may be quite light-weight if the ship is not loaded with heavy cargo or ballast. This unequal distribution of forces, with great weights but little buoyancy fore and aft, and little weight but great buoyancy amidships, leads to deformation of the hull.
