FORECAST RECORD [3 records]

Record 1 2004-03-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorological Forecasting, Data Measurement and Analysis
DEF

Forecast which contains a statement of the likelihood of a specific event ...

OBS

E.g. a shower, during a specific period at a particular place.

CONT

Probabilities or probabilistic forecasts [are] an attempt to convey the uncertainty in a forecast by expressing its likelihood of occurrence as a probability, or percentage. High probabilities do not guarantee an outcome-they merely indicate that that outcome is highly likely. Probabilities are usually based on the frequency of occurrence in the historical record. For instance, if the chance of receiving above-median rainfall in a particular climate scenario is 60%, then 60% of past years when that scenario occurred had above median rainfall, and 40% had below-median rainfall.

Record 2 1999-04-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorological Forecasting, Data Measurement and Analysis
DEF

An inaccurate forecast, usually a situation in which significant weather is expected, but does not occur.

CONT

There is, unfortunately, no way to tell beforehand in which season our forecast will do well or poorly... Our 1998 forecast, as in last year's(1997) forecast did not perform well because the forecast variables which have shown to be successful in prior years have just not worked well during the last two years. We attributed last year's forecast bust to the strongest El Niño on record which neither we nor anyone else was able to well forecast.

OBS

bust: slang (Weather Glossary).

French

Domaine(s)

OBS

bide : familier.

[History of Hypertext] In addition to the establishment of individual links, Bush also wanted the Memex to support the building of trails through the material in the form of a set of links that would combine information of relevance for a specific perspective on a specific topic. He even forecast the establishment of a new profession of "trail blazers", "who find delight in the task of establishing useful trails through the enormous mass of the common record. "In current terminology, these trail blazers would be people who add value to published collections of text and other information by providing a web of hypertext links to supplement the basic information. But since we do not even have a market for basic hypertexts yet, we unfortunately have to do without special trail blazers.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Désignations des emplois (Généralités)
  • Périphériques (Informatique)
CONT
