CONT

CONT

Uncocking the laid-back wrist creates a whippy motion that gives her racquet head speed and, as a result, pace.

CONT

DEF

A ground stroke played by left-handers to the left of the body, and by right-handers to the right.

CONT

For the right-handed player, all strokes on the right side of the body are forehand and all strokes on the left side of the body are backhand.

CONT

When Greg Rusedski hits a tennis ball, it seems to involve a lot of moving parts. A lean six-foot-four and 190 pounds, he’s all arms and legs as he whomps his big serve and whacks his forehands and backhands.

CONT

After Becker plopped a forehand into the net, he offered a perfunctory handshake at the net without even glancing at Voinea.

OBS

Both the French and Spanish make much use of the anglicism "drive", albeit not in a correct fashion : In English "drive" is supposed to imply a ball hit with a lot of pace to win a point outright, regardless of the type of spin used to accomplish this task, and regardless of which side it is hit(forehand or backhand).(The terms "shot" and "stroke", being more neutral, need not imply any added spin whatsoever.) However in both French and Spanish, "drive" is also used often as a synonym for "forehand"(shot/stroke).

DEF

CONT

DEF

Action of hitting the ball and the resulting action. ... A player is deemed to have attempted a stroke if he faces up to the ball with his racket, attempts to play and misses.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

CONT

The technical manner of hitting the tennis ball(forehand, backhand, volley, etc.) and the resulting action combine to constitute a stroke.

CONT

The height and direction of the bound can be affected by the nature of the surface, the amount of spin, the weather conditions and ... the power of the strike.

CONT

Compact backswings and short, smooth strokes are best [if you want to use the new Dunlop Max Enforcer tennis racquet].

CONT

Player and ball are together during the stroke.

OBS

Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. A "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. One speaks of "classical strokes" rather than "classical shot". A "blow" on the other hand is rather a blunt, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" can often be used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings.

Either the area close to the left sideline or the area close to the right sideline of a tennis court. Sometimes used to refer to the side from which a stroke is initiated, as in the phrase, "he is steady on both wings", i. e. he is consistent on both the backhand and on the forehand sides.

OBS

Warning: the term "side" is both generic and ambiguous in tennis. Depending on the perspective of the person using the term, it can either mean the area to the left or right of him, or the area on the other side of the net (=end). To avoid ambiguity, qualify the term "side" (the opposing side = el campo de su adversario) or use the term "wing", depending on the circumstance. Compare with "end".
