FOREHAND VOLLEY [10 records]

Record 1 2012-07-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

The right-hand service court into which the server must serve when the score is "deuce". In other words, the right half of a tennis player’s court as that player faces the opposing baseline.

OBS

The term "forehand court" is only valid if one were to assume that the recipient of the message is a righthander. Otherwise use one of the other synonyms. Other related term: station (e.g. to stand in the correct station before serving).

CONT

When you are serving from your forehand side, it’s usually a good idea to give your receiver another wide-angle serve that takes him across his forehand sideline.

CONT

If your volley went to the other sideline(his backhand), you’ll do just the reverse : you’ll drift over into your own forehand court.

CONT

In delivering the service, the Server shall stand alternately behind the right and left Courts beginning from the right in every game.

CONT

The point score being 15-all, the Server, by mistake, serves from the left-hand Court. He wins the point. He then serves again from the right-hand Court, delivering a fault.

DEF

Any stroke in which the ball is hit on the fly before it bounces.

OBS

In modern tennis the server often rushes to the net to volley the return beyond the receiver’s reach, hence the term "serve-and-volley".

OBS

In English the term "volley" can either mean the actual stroke or motion whereby the ball is hit before it bounces, or it can mean the result of such an action. In French, two terms (volée/balle volée) are needed to render this reality. Plural: volleys.

DEF

Action of hitting the ball and the resulting action. ... A player is deemed to have attempted a stroke if he faces up to the ball with his racket, attempts to play and misses.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

CONT

The technical manner of hitting the tennis ball(forehand, backhand, volley, etc.) and the resulting action combine to constitute a stroke.

CONT

The height and direction of the bound can be affected by the nature of the surface, the amount of spin, the weather conditions and ... the power of the strike.

CONT

Compact backswings and short, smooth strokes are best [if you want to use the new Dunlop Max Enforcer tennis racquet].

CONT

Player and ball are together during the stroke.

OBS

Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. A "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. One speaks of "classical strokes" rather than "classical shot". A "blow" on the other hand is rather a blunt, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" can often be used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings.
