Phagocytosis [is a] process by which certain living cells called phagocytes ingest or engulf other cells or particles. The phagocyte may be a free-living one-celled organism, such as an amoeba, or one of the body cells, such as a white blood cell. In some forms of animal life, such as amoebas and sponges, phagocytosis is a means of feeding. In higher animals, phagocytosis is chiefly a defensive reaction against infection and invasion of the body by foreign substances(antigens). 2, record 2, English, - phagocytosis

The clonal selection theory is based on the proposition that during development each lymphocyte becomes committed to react with a particular antigen before ever being exposed to it. A cell expresses this commitment in the form of surface receptor proteins that specifically fit the antigen. The binding of antigen to the receptors activates the cell, causing it both to multiply and mature. Thus a foreign antigen selectively stimulates those cells that bear complementary antigen-specific receptors and are thus already committed to respond to it. This is what makes immune responses antigen-specific. The term "clonal" in clonal selection derives from the postulate that the immune system is composed of millions of different families, or clones, of cells, each consisting of T or B lymphocytes descended from a common ancestor. Since each ancestral cell is already committed to make one particular antigen-specific receptor protein, all cells in a clone have the same antigen specificity. 1, record 4, English, - clonal%20selection

1, record 4, French, - s%C3%A9lection%20clonale

With the difference frequency between oscillators adjusted to zero with pure carrier gas flowing through the detector, the presence of a foreign vapor in the cell will produce a different frequency which is linearly related to the amount of material introduced through an injection port in the carrier gas stream and inversely proportional to the absolute temperature for a given component at a constant density or concentration in the cell and for a particular operating frequency. 2, record 7, English, - Clapp%20oscillator

The technical problems involved in gene transfer therapy make heart transplant surgery look easy. Theoretically, recombinant DNA(inserting strands of DNA where they don’t naturally occur) allows for gene transplantation. Realistically, it is extremely difficult. Researchers have yet to find a way to put a healthy gene into a human somatic cell. DNA is well protected within the cells. DNA writes codes for life, and life would change if DNA were altered. The cell views altered(mutant) DNA as foreign, just like the body views a donor heart. Just like the body has an immune system, the cell has defenses against mutant DNA. 2, record 8, English, - gene%20transplantation

1, record 8, French, - transplantation%20g%C3%A9n%C3%A9tique

An encounter with a foreign pathogen or antigen stimulates naive T lymphocyte activation and the generation of immunologic memory. The T cells which are responsible for immunologic memory differ, both phenotypically and functionally, from naive T cells. Of interest is the observation that aging is associated with an enhanced level of memory T cells, suggesting that the qualitative T cell response differs in the elderly. Further, differences in the proportion of memory to naive T cells may be responsible for immune dysfunction and autoimmunity associated with the aging process. In general, the goal of our research is to characterize the differences between antigenically naive(virgin) and memory T helper cells at the developmental, phenotypic, and functional levels 1, record 9, English, - naive%20T%20lymphocyte

The idea being that the bacteria's own DNA is modified at the proper sites and hence is protected from the action of the restriction enzyme. However if foreign DNA enters the cell, such as by transformation or by a virus, that DNA is "foreign" and not correctly modified, hence it is a substrate for the restriction enzyme and is cut up into small pieces. 5, record 11, English, - restriction%2Dmodification%20system

Investigation has shown that this restriction was due to bacterial enzymes that recognize specific sites on a "foreign" viral DNA and cleave that DNA. To protect its own DNA the bacterial cell makes a modification enzyme that adds methyl groups to nucleotides constituting the recognition sites for the restriction endonuclease, making them resistant to cleavage(modification-restriction system). 2, record 13, English, - modification%2Drestriction%20system

The body's immune system distinguishes normal from "foreign" cells by the molecules, called antigens, found on each cell wall. Cancer cells have specific antigens that act as targets for the immune system. Some scientists say a vaccine containing the right combination and number of these antigens-a cocktail, in research lingo-is the best potential weapon. 1, record 15, English, - antigen%20cocktail

The essential ingredients of a recombinant DNA experiment are : 1. A DNA vehicle(vector, replicon) which can replicate in living cells after foreign DNA is inserted into it. 2. A DNA molecule to be replicated(passenger), or a collection of them. 3. A method of joining the passenger to the vehicle. 4. A means of introducing the joined DNA molecule into a host organism in which it can replicate(DNA transformation or transfection). 5. A means of screening or genetic selection for those cells that have replicated the desired recombinant molecule. This is necessary since transformation and transfection methods are inefficient, so that most members of the host cell population have no recombinant DNA replicating in them. This selection or screening for desired recombinants provides a route to recovery of the recombinant DNA of interest in pure form. 1, record 17, English, - DNA%20transformation
