When studying evolution, DNA is especially important in its application to identifying and separating organisms into species. However, DNA is a fragile molecule, and it degrades over time. For most fossil species, there is essentially no hope of ever acquiring DNA from their fossils, so answers to questions about their appearance, physiology, population structure, and more may never be fully answerable. For more recently extinct species, scientists have, and continue to, extract ancient DNA(aDNA) which they use to reconstruct the genome of long-gone ancestors and relatives. 4, record 1, English, - ancient%20deoxyribonucleic%20acid

A graduated cylinder(also called measuring cylinder or graduated glass) is a piece of laboratory glassware or plasticware used to accurately measure out volumes of chemicals for use in reactions. They are generally more accurate and precise for this purpose than flasks. Often, the largest graduated cylinders are made of polypropylene for its excellent chemical resistance or polymethylpentane for its clarity, making them lighter to ship and less fragile than glass. Polypropylene cylinders have excellent chemical resistance and do not shatter when dropped, a valuable safety feature for all laboratories. 2, record 42, English, - graduate

At low temperatures(especially during clear weather) a temperature gradient appears in the snow, bringing about phenomena which render the snow or individual layers more fragile and loosen the bonds between crystals. The snow in these layers is called crusted snow, white frost or liquid snow. It can be recognised by its dryness, and on a slope it flows and looks like crystals of sugar. Layers of compressed snow lying on the fragile layer of white frost may tear off and trigger an avalanche. Dangerous layers of crusted snow are a very frequent phenomenon in cold winters with little snow. 4, record 45, English, - crusted%20snow

The Protocol Concerning Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife(the SPAW Protocol) has been internationally recognized as the most comprehensive treaty of its kind. Adopted in Kingston, Jamaica by the member governments of the Caribbean Environment Programme on 18 January 1990, the SPAW Protocol preceded other international environmental agreements in utilizing an ecosystem approach to conservation. The Protocol acts as a vehicle to assist with regional implementation of the broader and more demanding global Convention on Biological Diversity(CBD). The objective of the Protocol is to protect rare and fragile ecosystems and habitats, thereby protecting the endangered and threatened species residing therein. The Caribbean Regional Co-ordinating Unit pursues this objective by assisting with the establishment and proper management of protected areas, by promoting sustainable management(and use) of species to prevent their endangerment and by providing assistance to the governments of the region in conserving their coastal ecosystems. 1, record 55, English, - Protocol%20Concerning%20Specially%20Protected%20Areas%20and%20Wildlife

The montane ecosystems : The information was compiled after a visit to several mountains in Africa.... The Montane Zones [are] Nival zone, 4300 m, Alpine zone, 3500 m, Health zone, 3000 m, Hagenia/Hypericum zone, 2800 m, Bamboo zone, 2400 m, Forest(Savannah) grassland. Characteristics : The soils are distinctly acidic. The humus in the soil is determined by the moistness of the mountain. The moister the mountain the more the humus. Where the soil water is close to the surface, there is more vegetation.... Plants are adapted to high radiation levels and low temperatures. During sunny weather the solar radiation is intense and may cause strong surface heating on the plants. It is a very fragile ecosystem whereby plants take a long time to grow because of the low temperatures and poor soils.... Another characteristic of the montane ecosystem is thin air. As one rises along the altitude, the air becomes less dense.... Montane ecosystems are high rainfall areas.... Readying the electrotype shell. The metal layer deposited on the mould is called a shell and is 2/10 to 4/10 of a mm in thickness(8/1000 to 16/1000 of an inch)... The thickness is in function of the amount of time given to the process of electrolysis. Once the desired thickness is achieved the shell must be detached from the mould. This is not always an easy matter. If the mould is made of wax it can be removed with boiling water... Plastic moulds are removed by pulling them off, and lead moulds must be cut away along the edges. Shells are fragile and as they are not rigid they are sometimes damaged when being removed from the mould. In any case, shells must be backed to make them hard enough to print with. Backing is usually done by pouring a molten alloy made of lead(97%) and antimony(3%) onto the back of the shell. 2, record 65, English, - electrotype%20shell

Pycnodysostosis, a hereditary form of dwarfism, is also a rare disease, occurring in fewer than 1 out of 100, 000 people... [Chromosome 1] appears to play a pivotal role in the function of the osteoclasts, cells that continuously dissolve bone and regenerate it; when the gene is mutated, bones become abnormally thick, fragile, and liable to fracture. Other symptoms of the disease include an open fontanel, or soft, unfused spot on the skull, short fingers and toes, and a receding chin. 1, record 72, English, - pycnodysostosis

Anger does not disappear if we refuse to deal with it : it continues to grow within us. Vertical case loaders. This method of case loading is used primarily in the beverage, glass, can, and plastic container industries, where fragile or irregular-shaped containers require some special packing considerations. As with the horizontal case packers, the product is delivered to the machine infeed conveyor from upstream filling equipment to the accumulator section.... When all lanes are filled in the accumulator area, a formed corrugated case is positioned underneath the loading mechanism ready for depositing. At that point, retractable shifter plates in the accumulator area move out allowing the containers to drop vertically through fingers into the cells of the case... 3, record 82, English, - top%2Dload%20packer
