FRAGILE GLASS [4 records]

English

Subject field(s)
  • Measuring Instruments
  • Collaboration with the FAO
CONT

Two distinct disadvantages restrict the usefulness of liquid-in-glass thermometers in industry; glass is very fragile, and the position of the thermometer for accurate temperature measurement is not always the best position for reading the scale of the thermometer. These difficulties are overcome in the mercury-in-steel thermometer. This type of thermometer works on exactly the same principle as the liquid-in-glass thermometer.

A graduated cup, tube, or flask; a measuring glass used by apothecaries and chemists.

CONT

A graduated cylinder(also called measuring cylinder or graduated glass) is a piece of laboratory glassware or plasticware used to accurately measure out volumes of chemicals for use in reactions. They are generally more accurate and precise for this purpose than flasks. Often, the largest graduated cylinders are made of polypropylene for its excellent chemical resistance or polymethylpentane for its clarity, making them lighter to ship and less fragile than glass. Polypropylene cylinders have excellent chemical resistance and do not shatter when dropped, a valuable safety feature for all laboratories.

CONT

Vertical case loaders. This method of case loading is used primarily in the beverage, glass, can, and plastic container industries, where fragile or irregular-shaped containers require some special packing considerations. As with the horizontal case packers, the product is delivered to the machine infeed conveyor from upstream filling equipment to the accumulator section.... When all lanes are filled in the accumulator area, a formed corrugated case is positioned underneath the loading mechanism ready for depositing. At that point, retractable shifter plates in the accumulator area move out allowing the containers to drop vertically through fingers into the cells of the case...

OBS

Contrary to the French documentation that has been consulted, case loaders in the U.S. and probably Canada apparently load case only from above.

DEF
