Record 2 2010-04-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mineralogy
DEF

Pertaining to the rounded, globular texture of mineral formed by colloidal precipitation.

CONT

Volcanic massive sulphide deposits.... The dominant original textures appear to be colloform banding of the sulphides with much development of framboidal pyrite, perhaps reflecting colloidal deposition.

CONT

In general, [Mississippi Valley-Type] deposits are renowned for the large size and crystallographic variety of their constituent minerals. Some districts, in contrast, are characterized by their extremely fine-grained ores as exemplified by the banded, colloform sphalerite containing skeletal galena crystals as at Pine Point and Polaris in Canada and the Silesia District in Poland.

OBS

colloform: term used at Natural Resources Canada - Earth Sciences Sector.

PHR

Colloform cassiterite, sulphide, texture.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Minéralogie
DEF

Qui présente un aspect colloïdal.

CONT

[...] lits colloformes ou botryoïdaux de très fins cristaux [...]

OBS

colloforme : terme en usage à Ressources naturelles Canada - Secteur des sciences de la Terre.

PHR

Minerai, pechblende colloforme.

PHR

Cassitérite, sulfure, texture colloforme.

Record 3 1999-05-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mineralogy
DEF

A texture, often found in certain types of mineral deposits, where crystals have grown in a radiating and concentric manner which may reflect underlying geochemical controls. Lead-zinc deposits of sedimentary origin often show colloform banding of pyrite and sphalerite ...

CONT

... colloform banding ... is a very fine scale banding involving one or more sulphides very like the banding in agate. Some workers believe that it results from colloidal deposition and that the banding is analogous to the Liesegang rings formed in some gels. This banding is very susceptible to destruction by recrystallization and may be partially or wholly destroyed by diagenesis or low grade metamorphism, producing a granular ore.

CONT

Textures vary with the degree of recrystallization. The dominant original textures appear to be colloform banding of the sulphides with much development of framboidal pyrite, perhaps reflecting colloidal deposition. Commonly however, recrystallization, often due to some degree of metamorphism, has destroyed the colloform banding and produced a granular ore.

DEF
