Record 4 2002-06-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Telecommunications
  • Internet and Telematics
DEF

Refers to signals which are arbitrarily close in frequency to some defined precision. They are not sourced from the same clock and so, over the long term, will be skewed from each other.

OBS

Their relative closeness of frequency allows a switch to cross connect, switch, or in some way process them. That same inaccuracy of timing will force a switch, over time, to repeat or delete frames(called frame slips) in order to handle buffer underflow or overflow.

OBS

plesio: close, near, like.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Télécommunications
  • Internet et télématique
DEF

Record 5 2001-11-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Computer Graphics
CONT

In practical graphics applications, one starts with a set of vertices for the polygon in user's co-ordinates. For the seed filling algorithm to work, first the borders have to be drawn using the border colour(normally, using Bresenham), after which an internal point has to be identified and then the seed filling algorithm executed. Filling algorithms can be used to determine areas of closed polygons at the raster level in terms of pixel numbers. The polygon is filled with a unique colour and then the number of pixels are counted which have this colour value in the frame buffer, or more efficiently within the min/max box of the polygon.

A chip that stores instructions and data temporarily while calculations are under way in the microprocessor.

CONT

the dynamic RAM(DRAM) chips that make up the frame buffer can be accessed by only one processor-the host processor or the graphics chip-at a time, and the i/o port used for this access must also serve as the port for the refresh data sent constantly to the screen.

One function of the RMS chip is the ability to address up to a megabit of display memory and to support a "virtual screen", which is essentially an image, stored in the frame buffer, that exceeds the screen's display capacity.

Record 8 1985-05-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Computer Graphics
CONT

The NCR chips organize data in 8x8-pixel arrays called raster blocks. To draw figures into the system's frame buffer, the bits in memory are divided into raster blocks, a block is transferred to the 7300, where pixels within the block are modified, and the block is then returned to the frame buffer... raster op logic in the 7301 can act directly on the frame buffer's raster blocks.
