The Red River style of log building construction was one of the original methods used in Canada. The logs were left rounded with notched ends. This type of construction consisted of a basic frame of grooved, vertical, squared posts, mortised and tenoned into sills at their bases or set directly into the ground(in rare, early cases), and at their tips, mortised and tenoned into squared plates. Horizontal, squared timbers were fixed between these posts, with the tenons of the horizontal timbers fitting into the vertical groove of the posts. Roof structures of varying types were built on the wall plates. Red River Frame construction allowed both flexibility and portability. Large buildings could be erected using short logs, and buildings could be easily dismantled, moved and put up elsewhere. For these reasons, Red River Frame was the predominant type of construction used in the Canadian West during the fur trade era. The Red River style of log construction has spread across North America and is currently enjoying new popularity. Red River log construction is yet another Metis contribution to the development of Canada. 2, record 5, English, - Red%20River%20frame%20construction

Buildings constructed before 1870 are of great importance because they recall the Red River Settlement era. The... stevedoring crane... is generally of nonswing-boom construction... The load is usually carried on the traction wheels and the steering is at the rear, so that the transportation of a load does not adversely affect the traction or the steering of the vehicle. The large driving wheels in front are suited to carry the concentration of tractor and working load, thus providing a maximum of tractive effort for traveling, light or loaded. This type of crane is generally of 5-ton capacity and has a boom, hinged on top of the frame, providing the maximum of reach with a minimum of required headroom. The boom is generally of balanced cantilever girder design, power-operated, and can be raised and lowered by power from the driver's seat. It can also be adjusted-without a load on the hook-to any of a number of positions of reach and height of hook, depending on the character of the load and the overhead conditions in the operating area. 1, record 17, English, - stevedoring%20crane

Ross House is important because it was the first Post Office in Western Canada.... The construction of Ross House is a prime example of a Red River frame building.... It is made almost entirely of oak timber. All the logs used for construction were hand carved. 1, record 25, English, - Red%20River%20frame%20building

2, record 25, English, - Red%20River%20frame%20building

The standard measurement for frame strength is a term known as "RBM" (Resistance to Bending Movement). The RBM is the yield strength of the frame material multiplied by the section modules of the frame rail. A typical yield strength of steel used in commercial truck chassis is 50,000 psi, and the section modules per frame is 13.3 to 13.4 inches cubed. Therefore, the RBM per rail is approximately 670,000 inch-pounds, with the RBM of the entire chassis frame (both rails) being double that, or 1,340,000 pounds. 4, record 27, English, - resistance%20to%20bending%20moment

Furthermore, a single frame in lieu of old double frames, such as those found in older dump trucks, saves 300-500 lb. in tare weight but still provides strong resistance to bending movement in the frame, which is essential when operating in a severe construction environment. 6, record 27, English, - resistance%20to%20bending%20moment

The true monocoque construction uses formers, frame assemblies, and bulkheads to give shape to the fuselage, but the skin carries the primary stresses. Since no bracing members are present, the skin must be strong enough to keep the fuselage rigid. Thus, the biggest problem involved in monocoque construction is maintaining enough strength while keeping the weight within allowable limits. 2, record 42, English, - monocoque%20construction
