A "RAW Signal Data" product contains raw or unprocessed radar video baseband data in complex in-phase and quadrature signal(I and Q) format as they are recorded by the spacecraft. The only processing performed to the downlink X-band "raw signal data" is the frame synchronization, meaning re-assembly of the data into contiguous radar range lines in matrix form, and the CEOS [Committee on Earth Observations Satellite] formatting. Each range line of data is represented by one Signal Data Record in the RAW CEOS product.

OBS

The RAW product can contain any single beam mode, or for ScanSAR any combination of different beam modes, depending on the operation of the SAR instrument during the data reception or recording period. A RAW product cannot, however, combine data from more than one beam mode, i.e. data from two different beam modes are always packaged as two separate products. A RAW product must be SAR processed before it can be displayed as imagery. RAW products are typically produced on 8 mm (Exabyte) tapes. This is the standard medium for exchanging data between network stations.

OBS

Raw data products are available for all RADARSAT beam modes.

To remove interlacing from images ... for TV [television] broadcasting.

OBS

Interlacing, invented in the 1940s, is probably the earliest form of video compression. Instead of transmitting a complete video frame 60 times every second, engineers discovered that they could halve the bandwidth needed by the TV signal if they sent alternately odd and even "fields", each field comprising just the odd or even picture lines.... When viewed on a progressive display device, such as a PC, two fields are interlaced to create one frame. Because half the frame's lines are captured a fraction of a second later than the other half, fast-moving objects may appear jagged, the result of the object advancing slightly within 1/60th of a second... It is possible to remove the jagged-edge interlace artifacts by applying a process known as "de-interlacing" to the video.

Although the redesigned station is now being built as much as possible on the ground, the entire monolithic structure cannot be lobbed into orbit in one piece. The sections must be small enough to fit inside the Space Shuttle payload bay, which limits segments to about 15 ft(4. 6 m) in diameter and 45 ft(13. 7 m) in length. By the time the space frame truss segments are ready for launch, they have been fitted with such hardware as electric lines, batteries, antennas, gyroscopes, robotic arms, solar panel assemblies, and heat radiators. The actual truss is hard to identify once all the equipment is loaded onto it; there's no wasted space. Once the segments are in space the astronauts will simply bolt them together with a few fasteners and then connect hoses, ducts, and other utilities by plugging them into ports between sections.

DEF

The total area, occupied by the picture, that is scanned while the picture signal is not blanked.

CONT

When the requirements of television were first established, it was necessary to decide on a standard repetition rate for showing complete pictures, that is the number of complete frames per second. It was finally decided that thirty complete pictures would be displayed on the screen each second. These complete pictures are referred to as frames. A frame frequency of only thirty pictures per second would result in a flicker discernible to the eye, so each picture is divided into two parts called fields. Two fields must be produced in order to make one complete picture or frame.

OBS

In the United States, each frame contains 525 horizontal scanning lines, and 30 complete frames are shown per second.

CONT

CONT

French

Domaine(s)

DEF

DEF

[Television and video screen] The number of horizontal lines per second (15,750 hertz in the United States).

OBS

The number of horizontal scanning lines in a field is one-half the total 525 lines for a complete frame, since one field contains every other line. This yields 262 1/2 horizontal lines for each vertical field. Since the time for a field is 1/60 s and since it contains 262 1/2 lines, the number of lines per second is 262 1/2 lines, the number of lines per second is 262 1/2 X 60=15, 750.

French

Domaine(s)

DEF
