A standard movie, which is also known as motion picture, can be defined as a sequence of several scenes. A scene is then defined as a sequence of several seconds of motions recorded without interruption. A scene usually has at least three seconds. A movie in the cinema is shown as a sequence of still pictures, at a rate of 24 images per second. Similarly, a TV [television] broadcast consists of a transmission of 30 frames per second ..., 25 frames per second ... or anything from 5 to 30 frames per second for typical videos in the Internet.

Rate gyro : Principles of Operation. The Crossbow DMU [dynamic measurement unit] contains three accelerometers and three angular rate gyros. The three angular rate gyros use vibrating piezoelectric ceramic transducers to measure the Coriolis acceleration. In the 1830's G. G. de Coriolis discovered that an object moving perpendicular to a rotating frame will cause an observer on the rotating frame to see an apparent acceleration of the object.

Progressive-scan DVD players add an important additional step to create a better-looking picture-they generate a progressive-scan video signal through a process called de-interlacing(sometimes called "line-doubling"). The de-interlacer's first task is to look at the interlaced video signal as it leaves the MPEG decoder and determine whether its original source was 24-frame-per-second film or 30-frame-per-second video. The original frame rate determines the type of processing necessary to create an optimized progressive-scan signal.

Angular rate gyro accuracy is characterized by two parameters: scale factor and drift. The scale factor describes the capability of the gyro to accurately sense angular velocity at different angular rates. This value is used to convert the voltage output from the gyro into an angular rate. System imperfections can cause small variations in the scale factor. These variations appear as a factor at the output of the gyro. Gyro drift characterizes the ability of the gyro to reference all rate measurements to the nominal zero point. It appears as an additive term on the gyro output, so any actual drift away from a given or predetermined value will cause the angular errors to accumulate.

A special kind of gyroscope that measures rotation rate around a fixed axis.

A gyroscope that is suspended in just one gimbal whose bearings form its output axis and which is restrained by a spring; rotation of the gyroscope frame about an axis perpendicular to both spin and output axes produces precession of the gimbal within the bearings proportional to the rate of rotation.

Gyrometers and gyroscopes. Gyrometers measure the angular velocity. Such measurement is based on the measure of Coriolis forces for a mobile in linear motion, when an additional rotation occurs... Gyroscopes are made of a solid body with high angular velocity around an axis of symmetry ... which induces a high angular stability in presence of perturbations. Such a device is used to preserve a fixed inertial orientation, while the rest of the system in motion. It must be noted that both devices provide an information about angular velocity. The first device output is the instantaneous angular velocity, while the second device output is the integration of the angular velocity during a period of time. Angular position information can be computed from gyrometers output by integration, while angular velocity information can be computed from gyroscopes output by derivation.

[...] Les gyroscopes et les gyromètres sont utilisés : pour la stabilisation d'une direction ou d'un référentiel mécanique, par exemple pour la stabilisation d'une caméra, d'une antenne ou d'un viseur infrarouge d'un autodirecteur de missile; pour piloter un missile ou une fusée sur sa trajectoire; en association avec des «accéléromètres» , pour déterminer la position, la vitesse et l'attitude d'un véhicule (avion, char, bateau, sous-marin, etc.). Dans ce cas, il s'agit d'un équipement appelé centrale inertielle.

The gyroscopic frame is responsible for the stabilization of the platform. Three rate gyroscopes are fitted in the frame with their input axes mutually perpendicular... Pitch, roll, and yaw are detected by the three gyroscope input axes. The gimbal deflection of each of the gyroscopes is converted into a signal voltage that, when amplified, drives a servomotor which, via a gear train, rotates the frame back to its original position.

When the requirements of television were first established, it was necessary to decide on a standard repetition rate for showing complete pictures, that is the number of complete frames per second. It was finally decided that thirty complete pictures would be displayed on the screen each second. These complete pictures are referred to as frames. A frame frequency of only thirty pictures per second would result in a flicker discernible to the eye, so each picture is divided into two parts called fields. Two fields must be produced in order to make one complete picture or frame.

OBS

In the United States, each frame contains 525 horizontal scanning lines, and 30 complete frames are shown per second.

Although real motion video is the holy grail of multimedia, it still is impractical using today's technology. The current method for working with video is by capturing and converting the analog signal from a video source and either manipulating the image's data(which is written to video tape) or compressing the data using compression techniques(either software-only compression or a combination of hardware and software compression). To display or capture a single screen of an NTSC signal, you must have a video frame grabber. These are lowest on the rungs of the video ladder, in that they have less capability than boards that capture streaming video. These cards enable you to grab a single frame of video from a Laser Disk or a VCR. Video frame grabbers come in two varieties : single-frame capture and real-time capture. Single-frame capture boards enable you to freeze a selected frame and record it to your hard disk. In this function, single-frame boards are similar to scanners-they provide a means of capturing an image and saving it for use in a multimedia title.... Real-time frame grabbers capture full-motion video at a rate between 15 and 30 frames-per-second using video compression....
