RTS/CTS (Request to Send/Clear to Send) are the signals used for hardware flow control. By setting the RTS line to "ON," the computer tells the modem that it is ready to receive data.

The main reason for implementing RTS/CTS is to minimize collisions among hidden nodes. If there is no hidden node problem, it is best to deactivate this function, since it does add overhead and it may be detrimental to a system demanding high FPS [frames per second] and bit rates.

A standard movie, which is also known as motion picture, can be defined as a sequence of several scenes. A scene is then defined as a sequence of several seconds of motions recorded without interruption. A scene usually has at least three seconds. A movie in the cinema is shown as a sequence of still pictures, at a rate of 24 images per second. Similarly, a TV [television] broadcast consists of a transmission of 30 frames per second..., 25 frames per second... or anything from 5 to 30 frames per second for typical videos in the Internet.

When the requirements of television were first established, it was necessary to decide on a standard repetition rate for showing complete pictures, that is the number of complete frames per second. It was finally decided that thirty complete pictures would be displayed on the screen each second. These complete pictures are referred to as frames. A frame frequency of only thirty pictures per second would result in a flicker discernible to the eye, so each picture is divided into two parts called fields. Two fields must be produced in order to make one complete picture or frame.
