FRANCOLITE [3 records]

Record 1 2011-05-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mineralogy
Universal entry(ies)
Ca5(PO4,CO3)3(F,OH)
formula, see observation
Ca10[(PO4)6-x(CO3F)x]F2
formula, see observation
DEF

A colorless mineral of the apatite group containing carbonate and fluorine.

CONT

Fluorapatite is by far the most common mineral of the [apatite] series in crustal rocks, but pure fluorapatite is relatively rare... The replacement of PO4 by CO3 is particularly common and apatite containing appreciable amounts of CO2 and more than 1 per cent F is named carbonate fluorapatite or francolite...

OBS

Chemical formula: Ca5(PO4,CO3)3(F,OH) or Ca10[(PO4)6-x(CO3F)x]F2

Entrée(s) universelle(s)
Ca5(PO4,CO3)3(F,OH)
formula, see observation
Ca10[(PO4)6-x(CO3F)x]F2
formula, see observation
DEF

Phosphate de calcium carbonaté naturel, voisin de l'apatite.

OBS

Les grains [de phosphate dans les roches sédimentaires] peuvent être amorphes (collophanite), ce sont les plus fréquents, ou cristallisés (francolite).

OBS

Formule chimique : Ca5(PO4,CO3)3(F,OH) ou Ca10[(PO4)6-x(CO3F)x]F2

Record 2 2006-06-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mineralogy
DEF

A mineral of the apatite group [which] is the principal constituent of sedimentary phosphate rock.

CONT

Carbonate apatites are the most perplexing members of the apatite group from the standpoint of both chemistry and structure. Not only do they have CO3 groups substituting for PO4 groups, but they usually show an excess of water above F + OH=2.... Francolite is the F-bearing mineral of the carbonate apatites.

CONT

The mineralogy of phosphate deposits is usually complex, as they consist of a fine-grained mixture of various calcium phosphates, of which hydroxyl-apatite, carbonate-apatite, fluor-apatite ... are perhaps the most important.

CONT

Phosphatic oolites are enclosed within the layers of phosphorite in most of the nodules. The oolites are composed of concentric layers of collophane with an occasional layer of columnar francolite.
