FRAYED [16 records]

Record 1 2019-03-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Curtains and Blinds
CONT

Venetian blinds are one of the most practical and long-lasting window treatments around, but they can develop problems. When the cords break or the tapes look frayed and shabby, you can give your blinds new life by installing replacement cords and tapes, often sold in kits.

French

Domaine(s)

CONT

Les cordons de remontée peuvent parfois se briser par accident ou par usure. Si cela vous arrive, vous verrez que les remplacer est très simple : vous n'avez même pas besoin d'enlever vos stores!

Subject field(s)
  • Dactyloscopy
  • Police
CONT

[Fingerprint minutiae] data gathered by all five AFRSs [Automatic Fingerprint Reader System] for the file conversion effort... i. e., reading all fingerprint cards on file with subject date of birth 1929 and later, and storing the minutiae data [was completed. ] Many of the cards processed were dog-eared, frayed and required mending to process them through the AFRSs. [For] a modest additional investment, the minutiae detection processor can be included in the hardware, increasing the throughput by 50%.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Dactyloscopie
  • Police
OBS

Le processeur construit une image d'empreinte finale. Ainsi, on obtient une image amincie ou squelettisée des points caractéristiques d'une empreinte. Cette image est utilisée pour l'étape de la détection des minuties, qui s’avère alors être une opération triviale.

Record 4 2002-12-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Bones and Joints
DEF

The external semilunar cartilage of the knee.

CONT

The knee has two cartilage disks, called menisci, that are attached to the top portion of the tibia(the large lower leg bone). The lateral meniscus is located on the outer side of the knee joint, and the medial meniscus is on the inner side. These two wedge-shaped discs form a cradle for the cartilage covered condyles of the femur. The minisci absorb shock, and serve to cushion the knee. An injury to a meniscus may take the form of a small or large tear, a split in the disk, or a frayed or roughly torn area.

Replicas on this building, as well as fiberglass replacements of 60 concrete lanterns on the California Building(Museum of Man), put up during a renovation in 1975 [...], were frayed and discolored and were so slick that they did not adhere to walls. Donaldson insisted on using Glass-Fiber-Reinforced-Concrete(GFRC) because it rendered details with greater precision, lasted indefinitely, has the look and feel of stone that the original staff plaster was trying to emulate, can be integrally colored, won’t warp of deform, is easily patched and sealed, is fire-resistant, and when knocked on doesn’t sound like an object made of fiberglass.

  • Chains and Cables (Mechanical Components)
CONT

... attaching commercial sockets of forged steel to wire rope ends ... The wire rope is seized at the end and another seizing is applied at a distance from the end equal to the length of the basket of the socket ... For large ropes, the seizing should be several inches long. The end seizing is now removed and the strands are separated so that the fiber core can be cut back to the next siezing. The individual wires are then untwisted and "broomed out" and for the distance they are to be inserted in the socket are carefully cleaned with benzine, naphtha, or unleaded gasoline.

CONT

There are three types of zinced endings : A cone is formed from molten zinc poured into a mold in which a frayed rope end has been inserted; sometimes a ferrule is used as mold and stays on after pouring the zinc; or sockets are used instead of the ferrule. An open socket has ears to hold a pin and cotter. A closed socket has a loop or "bail. "Both are heavy forgings and find widespread use. All three zinced on endings need a good deal of preparation. The rope's end must be broomed out, cleaned with acid and straightened. Special endings : such as thimbles, clips, and clamps are quicker and easier to apply than a zinc socket, but efficiency is not as high as with other attachments.

Subject field(s)
  • Geology
OBS

The debris of the rock framework form kinds of partitions or "septa", between granitic veinlets of migmatites. These partitions become stretched, frayed and twisted in the mobilization of the rock mass. The granitic veinlets show a foliation resembling a fluidity. This foliation becomes discordant in separated parts of the migmatite within short distances, and very often even angular folds of septa are found in abrupt disharmony with other portions in the immediate neighborhood(...) This type of folding is called "symmigmatic" folding by M. Roques(1941).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géologie
OBS
