Hedge funds pool the capital of a small number of high net worth individuals or institutions under the direction of a single manager or small team. One of the reasons to domicile offshore is to be free to use trading strategies which traditional, domestically regulated retail fund are not allowed to do. A key technique is to use short as well as long positions. This can provide protection against a falling market... 2, record 9, English, - hedge%20fund

The second variant posits a reduced role for government, and the preservation of an integrated Canadian market as a result of "negative integration". This means that the provinces or states would commit themselves to the free movement of goods, services, labour, and capital among themselves and to achieve this, their powers would be limited by mutual agreement. Essentially, they would commit themselves to avoid discriminating against each other; in other respects each would have a free hand in setting policy. 1, record 13, English, - negative%20integration

1, record 13, French, - int%C3%A9gration%20n%C3%A9gative

A Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement(FIPA) is a bilateral agreement aimed at protecting and promoting foreign investment through legally-binding rights and obligations. FIPAs accomplish their objectives by setting out the respective rights and obligations of the countries that are signatories to the treaty with respect to the treatment of foreign investment. Typically, there are agreed exceptions to the obligations. FIPAs seek to ensure that foreign investors will not be treated worse than similarly situated domestic investors or other foreign investors; they will not have their investments expropriated without prompt and adequate compensation; and, in any case, they will not be subject to treatment lower than the minimum standard established in customary international law. As well, in most circumstances, investors should be free to invest capital and repatriate their investments and returns. 1, record 22, English, - Foreign%20Investment%20Promotion%20and%20Protection%20Agreement
