CONT

The chapter presents techniques of natural cooling of the buildings, which can be utilized by passive or free cooling. In case of the passive cooling, the cold is transferred into the building only by natural heat transfer mechanisms, while free cooling uses mechanical devices to transport the cold into the building.

Outside of their spacecraft on the Moon and in free space, astronauts must wear a pressurized spacesuit which protects the whole body from vacuum conditions. This suits contains several layers : a liquid cooling garment, a pressure garment and a thermal micro-meteoroid garment. … The liquid cooling garment is made of nylon with little tubes sewn into it. These tubes are worn next to the body. Water is circulated through the tubes.

Subject field(s)
  • Freezing and Refrigerating
  • Cooling and Ventilating Systems
DEF

Cooling a space [object or substance] air cooled by natural convection.

OBS

Cooling system... In some cases direct contact with ambient air(free convection) may be sufficient; in other cases it may be necessary to employ forced convection...

French

Domaine(s)
  • Congélation, surgélation et réfrigération
  • Systèmes de refroidissement et de ventilation
DEF

CONT

Ash behavior (fusion characteristics) with respect to clinkering tendency must be satisfactory for the type of firing equipment and furnace design used.

CONT

As the mixture [of raw materials] moves down the cylinder [of the rotary kiln], it progresses through four stages of transformation. Initially, any free water in the powder is lost by evaporation. Next, decomposition occurs from the loss of bound water and carbon dioxide. This is called calcination. The third stage is called clinkering. During this stage, the calcium silicates are formed. The final stage is the cooling stage.

CONT

The slurry is fed into huge rotary kilns fired with coal or natural gas. In the early stages of heating, the moisture is driven off. The dry powder then reaches the burning zone and partial fusion or clinkering occurs at a temperature of around 1,500 degrees Celsius.

OBS

Domaine(s)
  • Cimenterie
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Steam-Powered Machines and Condensers
DEF

A steam engine in which the steam is condensed after having exerted its force on the piston.

CONT

So what is the difference between a non-condensing and condensing engine? A "condensing" steam engine does not exhaust its piped steam. Instead the spent steam is piped into a devise whcih, like a car radiator, cools the steam turning it back in to liquid water(cooling and condensing the steam). That still very hot wtaer is pumped back into the boilers where it is reheated and reused. Since the returning water is still very hot it requires less heat to bring it back up to boiling temperature. A big savings in fuel and boiling water is free of mud and dirt like normal river water.

STEP : Satellite Test of the Equivalence Principle. Worden and Everitt have proposed to carry out an improved version of Galileo's Leaning Tower of Pisa experiment, by placing masses of different composition inside a satellite orbiting the Earth to obtain a long duration of free fall. Very high positional sensitivity can be achieved by cooling the experiment to 1. 8 K and using SQUIDs to detect in current changes in magnetic pickup coils. The test masses of different materials and the position measuring equipment are placed inside the satellite and micro Newton thrusters are used to cancel the small accelerations of the satellite due to air drag, radiation pressure and the solar wind which could couple to masses.

CONT

Heat transfer coefficients are shown as functions of downstream and transverse plate coordinates as determined experimentally for different blowing ratios near one and for levels of free stream turbulence from 1 percent to 17 percent of the free stream velocity. Heat transfer between the plate and the free stream is reduced by the film cooling at higher levels of free stream turbulence. Heat transfer is increased on the plate in the region between the film cooling jets at all levels of blowing ratio for one percent free stream turbulence. This undesirable augmentation of the heat transfer is modeled analytically and related to the axial vortices generated near the film cooling jet inlets. The strength of these vortices and the subsequent heat transfer increases are related to the blowing ration.

OBS

High expansion foam: Equipment and liquid foam concentrates variously designed to provide foams at expansion rates of 100 to 1 up to 1,000 to 1. Such foams have a rapid build-up and are used for flooding fire areas as well as for blanketing flammable liquids fires.

OBS
