When the "haul in" signal is given on the docking telegraph …, the operator pulls on the slack end of the rope that is wound loosely round the drum of the winch. This tightens the rope slightly on the drum and it grips the surface. The amount of tension on the free end of the rope is multiplied several hundred times and the resulting force is enough to move the entire ship, pulling it into the correct position. The [captain] signals with the docking telegraph or a hand held radio to tell the winch operator what to do and, by heaving in and paying out the ropes at each end of the ship, she can be positioned in exactly the right place regardless of the wind and waves. 1, record 9, English, - docking%20telegraph

The ICBL was launched in October 1992 by a group of six non-governmental organizations : Handicap International, Human Rights Watch, Medico International, Mines Advisory Group, Physicians for Human Rights and Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. These founding organizations witnessed the horrendous effect of mines on the communities they were working with in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America and saw how mines hampered and even prevented their development efforts in these countries. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines(ICBL) is a global network in over 70 countries that works for a world free of antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions, where landmine and cluster munition survivors can lead fulfilling lives. The Campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to bring about the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. Since then, we have been advocating for the words of the treaty to become a reality, demonstrating on a daily basis that civil society has the power to change the world. As a member of the Cluster Munition Coalition, the ICBL is engaged in the global effort to ban cluster munitions and to address their humanitarian impact. In December 2006, the ICBL decided to engage extensively in the global effort to prohibit cluster munitions. This marked the first time that the ICBL had become significantly engaged on an issue other than antipersonnel mines. The main reasons for the ICBL' s decision were that cluster munitions inevitably end up leaving behind large numbers of unexploded ’duds’ which behave essentially like antipersonnel mines; that many ICBL members had been already working extensively on cluster munitions; and that international efforts to achieve a global ban on cluster munitions were at a crucial point, a point where the ICBL could have a meaningful impact. 1, record 13, English, - International%20Campaign%20to%20Ban%20Landmines

1, record 13, French, - Campagne%20internationale%20pour%20interdire%20les%20mines

The drawbridge of ancient and medieval periods was built for military purposes. It was constructed to bridge the moat around the castle or fortified town and to be raised in case of attack. The open leaf also constituted an additional barricade across the entrance to the fortification. Many of these early structures were operated by a lever system. One end of the lever was connected to the free end of the span by chains, and the other was actually counterweighted. An arrangement of counterweights attached to chains running over pulleys and connected to the free end of the span was also much in use. 1, record 24, English, - drawbridge

Hogmanay is the Scots word for the last day of the year and is synonymous with the celebration of the New Year in the Scottish manner. Its official date is the 31 December. However this is normally only the start of a celebration which lasts through the night until the morning of the 1 January or, in many cases, 2 January. The roots of Hogmanay reach back to the pagan celebration of the winter solstice. In Europe, this evolved into the ancient celebration of Saturnalia, a great Roman winter festival, where people celebrated completely free of restraint and inhibition. The Vikings celebrated Yule, which later became the Twelve Days of Christmas, or the "Daft Days" as they were sometimes called in Scotland. The winter festival went underground with the Protestant Reformation and ensuing years, but re-emerged near the end of the 17th century. 1, record 36, English, - Hogmanay

Another increasingly popular type of anemometer is the propeller anemometer. This anemometer is simply a very small two- or three-blade propeller, calibrated so that the revolutions per minute (rpm) corresponds to specific wind speeds. This anemometer is known as a "lift" device because it relies upon the rational lift caused by the wind on the propellers to measure the wind speed. By using two propellers held fixed at a perpendicular angle to each other, one can simultaneously measure the wind speed and direction using vector analysis. By including a third propeller positioned vertically relative to the other two, vertical wind movements also can be measured. It should be noted that the effect of variations in air density (due to temperature and/or pressure conditions) are accounted for differently in lift devices (for example, propeller anemometers) and drag devices (for example, cup anemometers). 4, record 40, English, - propeller%20anemometer

Shake, Rattle & Roll Poster. Shake :... The International Space Station undergoes oscillations. If it is given a slight push, such as a bump from the Shuttle while undergoing a docking procedure, the ISS [International Space Station] vibrates with a to-and-fro shaking motion. Student Activity : Docking the Shuttle to an oscillating Space Station is a bit like trying to toss a ball into a swaying bucket from a distance. The trajectory of the ball must be perfect(the launch speed, angle and direction) and synchronized exactly with the motion of the oscillating bucket. Try it. Student Challenge : Clamp one end of a 30 cm steel ruler to the edge of a table so that it sticks straight out. Bend the free end of the ruler downward a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Attach a heavy mass(approximately 200 grams), such as a large blob of putty or Plasticine, to the free end of the ruler. Again, depress the free end of the ruler a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Try doubling the mass or changing the length of the free part of the ruler. Observe what happens to the motion of the ruler as the mass or length changes. Design an experiment to quantitatively measure the effect you have observed. To meet the needs of officers exercising payment authority, the total of undischarged commitments should be input into the regular accounting system at the cut-off date for each monthly statement, the entry being automatically reversed in the succeeding month. This information is required so that the officer may know the amounts of undischarged commitments and free balances when asked to requisition payments.... Purification of mutant enzymes is a prime requirement of biophysical and biochemical studies. Our investigations on the essential E. Coli enzyme glutaminyl-tRNA sybthetase demand mutant enzymes free of any wild-type protein contamination. However, as it is not possible to express non-complementing mutant enzymes in an E. Coli gInS-deletion strain, we developed a novel strategy to address these problems. Instead of following the common tactic of epitope-tagging the mutant protein of interest on an extrachromosomal genetic element, we fused a reporter epitope to the 5’ end of the chromosomal gInS-gene copy : this is referred as reverse epitope-tagging. 1, record 61, English, - reverse%20epitope%2Dtagging

For simple thickening of very dilute stocks up to 12% consistency, multidisc thickeners... can be used. A fiber mat forms on the face of each sector as it submerges in the vat of stock. After complete submergence, vacuum is applied and more pulp is deposited while filtrate is drawn through the mat. The initial filtrate is relatively cloudy and can be segregated(by the action of the end valve) for dilution uses. The later(clear) filtrate is sufficiently free of fiber to be used for shower water. Following emergence from the vat, the pulp mat is further dewatered and finally removed from the filter media by a knockoff shower. Multidisc thickeners are most commonly used as save all devices, i. e., to recover fine fibers from white water and reuse the water. 1, record 68, English, - multidisc%20thickener
