8, record 25, French, - impesanteur

STEP : Satellite Test of the Equivalence Principle. Worden and Everitt have proposed to carry out an improved version of Galileo's Leaning Tower of Pisa experiment, by placing masses of different composition inside a satellite orbiting the Earth to obtain a long duration of free fall. Very high positional sensitivity can be achieved by cooling the experiment to 1. 8 K and using SQUIDs to detect in current changes in magnetic pickup coils. The test masses of different materials and the position measuring equipment are placed inside the satellite and micro Newton thrusters are used to cancel the small accelerations of the satellite due to air drag, radiation pressure and the solar wind which could couple to masses. 2, record 38, English, - satellite%20test%20of%20the%20equivalence%20principle

Gravity acting on the center of mass of the gyroscope causes a torque at the gyroscope's point of contact with the surface on which it is resting. If you spun the gyroscope perfectly vertically, it wouldn’t do that(until friction perturbed it) because the force would be acting directly through the center of mass, nor would it precess like that if it were in free fall(because it is not in contact with any surface capable of inducing a torque). 5, record 40, English, - center%20of%20mass%20of%20the%20gyroscope

The instrument consists of a smooth-walled cylinder in which is a piston. The piston is mechanically raised at a predetermined frequency and is allowed to fall freely back to its minimum position. Within the cylinder is an accurately machined orifice through which the measured material enters the cylinder when the piston is raised and is displaced by the weight of the piston on its free fall. Thus the measurement of the time required by the piston to displace the material through the orifice is directly proportional to the viscosity of the material. 1, record 50, English, - falling%2Dpiston%2Dtype%20viscosity%2Dmeasuring%20element

Test for Special Form Radioactive Material.... Bending test : This test is performed only on long slender material with a minimum length of 10 cm and a length to minimum width ratio of not less than 10. The material is rigidly clamped in a horizontal position so that one half of its length protrudes from the face of the clamp. The orientation of the material is such that the package suffers maximum damage when its free end is struck by the flat face of a steel billet. The billet strikes the material so as to produce an impact equivalent to that resulting from a free vertical fall of 1. 4 kg through one metre. 1, record 51, English, - bending%20test

1, record 51, French, - %C3%A9preuve%20de%20pliage

The "Index-grain apparatus"(...) is a sedimentation device in which the free fall of grains is slowed by three nozzle-like constrictions which cause turbulence that results in better grading of the grains. In order to distinguish between the single grain fractions which settle in a graduated, conical, water-filled sedimentation vessel, a colored index set of three known grain fractions is added to the sediment before separation : 1 cmthree black grains in the grade 0. 02-0. 035 mm 1 cmthree red grains in the grade 0. 063-0. 11 mm 1 cmthree black grains in the grade 0. 2-0. 35 mm(...) The suspension with the added index set is poured into the filling tube, which is closed from below with a float stopper. The stopper is opened by squeezing a rubber bulb on the filling tube, and the suspension can immediately enter the lower sedimentation tube. The filling tube has a constriction that generates turbulence. The grains therefore enter the sedimentation tube pregraded. By multiplying the percentage volumes of the individual grades(minus the added colored index grains of each grade) by the average bulk density [(gamma]=1. 56), the weight-percentages of the individual grades are calculated on the basis of 100% dry material. 1, record 66, English, - Index%2Dgrain%20apparatus

1, record 66, French, - appareil%20%C3%A0%20grains%20color%C3%A9s%20comparateurs
