FREE FEEDING [4 records]

Record 1 2016-03-07

English

Subject field(s)
  • Agricultural Chemicals
  • Crop Protection
DEF

A chemical agent that causes a pest, as an insect, to stop eating.

CONT

Chemicals possess the properties of inhibiting the feeding of insect pests... these can be classed as antifeedants. The first chemicals noticed with these properties were initially referred to as repellants, but they are not repellants in that they do not merely drive the insect away to another plant but do actually inhibit feeding on that plant. In laboratory tests insects have remained on treated plants indefinitely and eventually starved to death without eating the leaves. In field tests the insects were free to wander elsewhere seeking food... they either found weed plants to feed on or died of predation and starvation.

OBS

"Repellant" may not be the good term to describe this concept. See the English context.

Key term(s)
  • antifeedant compound
  • antifeeding agent
  • feeding inhibitor

French

Domaine(s)
  • Agents chimiques (Agriculture)

DEF

  • Dog and Cat Breeding
CONT

This is also known as "ad lib" feeding or "free feeding. "Food is available at all times, as much as the pet wants, whenever the pet wants. Most lactating pets are fed by the free choice method, and it is generally the method of choice for feeding most cats. This method is most appropriate when feeding dry food which will not spoil if left out. Some dogs and cats, however, will overeat with this method, so two associated diseases must be considered : a) Obesity.... b) Developmental Bone Diseases....

CONT

The lingonberry fruitworm is a small moth whose larvae borrow into and feed on lingonberry fruit. Feeding damage causes berry loss, but most of the problems are caused by the wthitish caterpillars emerging from the fruit after it is picked. This results in reduced marketability. There is increasing interest in domesticated lingonberry cultivars from the US and Europe, and several of these cultivars are now being tested here. To ensure industry growth the fruit must be free of insects and insect damage. With this research goal, the Atlantic Cool Climate Crop Research Centre tested a monitoring system for the fruitworm using "pheromones".

OBS

The lingonberry, known locally as the partridgeberry, is a member of the cranberry family.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Animaux nuisibles aux cultures
CONT

CONT

An atomic absorption spectrophotometer measures element concentrations in solution by spraying(nebulising) the solution into a long narrow hot flame. Light from a hollow cathode lamp, containing the element to be analysed, passes above the long and narrow burner to a monochromator. The monochromator isolates ground state radiation from the hollow cathode lamp. The solution is sprayed into the fuel and air premixing chamber feeding the flame. Free atoms are produced in the flame because of the heat and reducing conditions. If the atoms are the same as the element in the lamp, then light is absorbed. The degree of absorption depends on the amount of that element present in the original solution. The results are compared with standard solutions which allow concentrations to be determined. The technique can be highly precise and accurate.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Optique
  • Appareils de mesure
DEF
