CONT

So called [float-in] and [float-off] ships are... known in which the floating cargo is floated into the ship's cargo space in superposed tiers in order to avoid the disadvantages of the use of ship borne lifting devices.... With such ships the height of the stowage spaces for each tier of floating cargo or floating containers has to be increased beyond and above the height of the floating vessels by an amount which results from the height differential between the light and deep load lines of the floating vessels from the upper and lower safety margin in order to allow an undisturbed and accident free float in and float off of the vessels and from the requisite height to accommodate the structures of the ship which segregate the cargo levels.

The clutch is composed of three discs on a shaft. Two of the discs, the driven disc and floating disc, are connected to the engine crankshaft and turn when the engine is running. The third disc, or clutch hub with lining, is free to turn on the shaft and is connected to the transmission by means of the drive belt. This disc is between the other two discs, and is the one with the lining. It turns when the scooter moves. As the three discs are pressed together, they are forced to turn together, transmitting engine power to the transmission.

The basic concept of the free-travelling boom is to deploy a V-shaped boom with its apex downwind. If the free end of each arm is retarded by a sea anchor or drogue,... the whole system will drift downwind at a velocity sensibly less than that of the floating oil.... As the drifting proceeds, the oil moves into the boom array and becomes trapped and concentrated into a relatively thick layer at the apex of the V structure.

The Boeing 707 KC-135 that flies parabolic arcs to create short periods of weightlessness, used by the NASA to train pilots and astronauts and so named for the effect its near-zero gravity environment has on its crew.

CONT

NASA normally uses the Vomit Comet to train astronauts, test equipment and carry out experiments. The fun starts when the plane noses over into a steep dive, creating a free fall that simulates the weightlessness of outer space. But the price for 30 seconds of floating fun is sudden, equal doses of two Gs, or a doubling of Earth's gravity. It's the sudden reversal that causes many passengers to lose their lunch.

OBS

Commonly known as the "Vomit Comet" or "Weightless Wonder" this particular plane, a Boeing 707, started out life in 1959 as an Air Force aerial tanker, but was used in the space agency’s microgravity experiments from 1973 to 1995.

CONT

OBS

comète à vomir : terme mal formé.

Flotation Clarifiers. Dissolved air flotation is a solids-removal process where fine air bubbles become attached to the suspended particles, thus reducing the density of individual particles and causing them to float to the surface. The separated solids then form a floating layer that is a mixture of solids and air bubbles. The buoyant force exerted by the entrapped air also acts to compact the solids into a smaller volume before the floating layer is skimmed off.... A flotation clarifier of recent design is illustrated in Figure 26-7. This unit features a deep, baffled flow shaft for the wastewater. Air is injected on the downcomer side at the bottom of the shaft where a portion is dissolved by hydrostatic pressure. Undissolved air rises against the downward flow, contributing to water saturation. Rising water on the other side of the shaft is thereby saturated with air, but free of undissolved air bubbles. As hydrostatic pressure declines, microscopic bubbles are released from solution and become attached to the suspended solids.
