So called [float-in] and [float-off] ships are... known in which the floating cargo is floated into the ship's cargo space in superposed tiers in order to avoid the disadvantages of the use of ship borne lifting devices.... With such ships the height of the stowage spaces for each tier of floating cargo or floating containers has to be increased beyond and above the height of the floating vessels by an amount which results from the height differential between the light and deep load lines of the floating vessels from the upper and lower safety margin in order to allow an undisturbed and accident free float in and float off of the vessels and from the requisite height to accommodate the structures of the ship which segregate the cargo levels.

Cribbing is essential in many extrication operations. Its most common use is to stabilize objects. Wood selected for cribbing should be solid, straight and free of major flaws such as large knots or splits. Cribbing surfaces should be free of any paint or finish because this can make the wood slippery, especially when it is wet. Cribbing can be made out of pieces of timber found in the debris and cut to size.... Cribbing involves multiple pieces of wood laid on the side and crossed. It spreads the load well and has many load transfer surfaces. It also has lateral stability depending on the ratio of width to height. The height should not be more than three times the width.

Instrument for measuring the opacity of the ionosphere during the absence of ionospheric disturbances by determining the absorption of electromagnetic energy emitted by an extraterrestrial cosmic radio noise.

Riometers measure the absorption of radio-noise from the stars(’cosmic-noise’) in the ionosphere. They usually operate at frequencies between 25Mhz and 50 Mhz where radio-waves are absorbed when there are significant numbers of free electrons in the height region from about 60-110 km. They make continuous observations of the noise-level and observe deceases in noise relative to the quiet-day level, when high-energy electrons and protons precipitate and cause increased ionisation.

The comb nephoscope consists essentially of a series of rods assembled in the form of a comb, and mounted on a vertical rod with the "teeth" of the comb horizontal. The vertical rod is free to turn, and is rotated by means of a pulley and rope device. The observer selects a recognizable feature of the cloud base, and then rotates the comb of the nephoscope until that feature appears to move along the longitudinal member of the comb.... By using the "teeth" of the comb, and a timepiece, the observer may time the motion of the cloud. The speed of the cloud may then be determined, provided its height is known.
