Subject field(s)
  • Atomic Physics
DEF

A molecular device capable of converting energy into movement and able to generate forces on the order of piconewtons.

CONT

The nanomotor has a positioning stroke up to some centimeters while operating with atomic resolution and thus builds a bridge over eight orders of magnitude. The nanomotor is a piezo driven linear motor consisting of a cylindrical housing and a slider with a free axial hole inside. It utilizes a piezo tube for fine positioning and a pulse wave produced by the same piezo tube for coarse movements. Every point of its stroke can be reached with a speed of up to 5 mm/s. In its free axial hole the nanomotor can transport a tip, a hose, an electrode, a hypodermic needle, a glass fiber or even a microgripper. The nanomotor is available in three different versions. The "small" nanomotor is half the size of a match stick. It can lift six times of its own mass. The dynamic force of this nanomotor is so high, that even imprints in diamond surfaces can be produced. Special versions of the nanomotor can operate in ultra high vacuum, in liquid helium, even under water or as non-magnetic drives.

PHR

Primer, virus nanomotor.

PHR

Nanotube nanomotor.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Fire-Fighting and Rescue Equipment
CONT

Rescuers must sometimes lift or pull an object to free a victim. Several rescue tools have been developed to assist in this task. These include tripods, winches, come-alongs, chains, pneumatic lifting bags, and block and tackle systems.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Matériel de secours et de lutte (incendies)
CONT

DEF

... the height to which the forks can lift without elevating the mast.

CONT

[Fork Truck Construction.] An important operational aspect of mast assemblies is freelift. Freelift is defined as the vertical distance forks can raise above the floor before the mast begins to extend from its collapsed height.

CONT

[Lift trucks. ] "Free lift" is the amount of movement the carriage can make before the cylinder yoke starts lifting the mast. A standard upright usually has just enough free lift to raise the load off the floor so the truck can go through a doorway without the top of the mast striking the door.

OBS

The amount of freelift available is dependent on the mast and truck design. Freelift may range from only a few inches on some models to over 60 in. (1500 mm) on the man-up turret truck. Most manufacturers offer trucks with either standard or "high" freelift available.

OBS

free lift : term standardized by ISO.

OBS

See also "low freelift," and "high freelift."

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chariots de manutention
CONT

CONT

The mast assembly of the fork truck consists of a steel upright assembly and hydraulic cylinders to provide the lifting capability of the fork truck. The mast consists of stationary outer channels and telescoping inner channels which provide for high lifting capabilities while permitting a low collapsed height. ... Multiple-stage masts increase mast complexity and require more energy than a low freelift design. The most economical mast for general purpose storage and in-plant transportation is a two-stage mast with low freelift.

CONT

The amount of freelift available is dependent on the mast and truck design. Freelift may range from only a few inches on some models to over 60 in. (1500 mm) on the man-up turret truck. Most manufacturers offer trucks with either standard or "high" freelift available.
