OBS

A 1968 agreement... froze the gold in the official reserves of individual nations... Under the agreement, two gold markets were established. One, the official gold market, would continue to price gold at thirty-five dollars an ounce in transactions between central banks and international monetary institutions; the other, the free market, would operate at supply and demand prices, with gold seeking its own level... The need for such an agreement came to an end in 1971...

CONT

An economically efficient price is one that would be charged in a perfectly competitive market. In such a market there are many buyers and many sellers who have full information about the price and cost of an item. They also know about possible substitutes and complementary products. Moreover, the prices of all products fully reflect all external costs and benefits.

CONT

Based on economic theory, in a perfectly free market-that is free from all constraints-price increases can’t stick.

CONT

The theory holding that if two kinds of money in circulation have the same denominational value but different intrinsic values, the money with higher intrinsic value will be hoarded and eventually driven out of circulation by the money with lesser intrinsic value.

CONT

Even if all countries went on the same 16/1 ratio, any tendency for mines to pour out the two metals at substantially different rates would lead to the free market's bidding their price ratios to some figure other than 16/1; and in this case, by a form of what is known as Gresham's Law-"Cheap money drives out good"-the result would be that the cheapest metal in the market place would all be given to Treasuries of the different countries, and in effect the world be on a single standard again-that of the cheapest metal.

DEF

Minitel user.

CONT

Businesses can market their products, place their orders and watch the price of their stock go up or down. During the current election campaign, Minitel offered subscribers a chance to grill Environment Minister Huguette Bouchardeau via computer; 10, 000 to 15, 000 people either asked questions or watched the conversation on their screens. On a free evening, Minitellers can check the cinema listings or play bridge with a master. It was bound to happen : gambling is heading for the information highway. In October Gaming Entertainment Television(GET), a cable-TV station based in Pittsburgh, is to start broadcasting horse-racing, poker and $1m-jackpot bingo, all of which will allow interactive gambling. At the same time, Sony's Game Show Channel, based in Los Angeles, is promising interactive versions of "Wheel of Fortune" and "The Price is Right". There is a market : 6m Americans play(by mailing in cards) the ordinary TV version of "The Price is Right".... interactivity is simply a wheeze to push up its ratings. In its first phase it will allow viewers to play for free(ie, without betting real money) and will offer small prizes to those who win. Eventually, however, it may permit real betting too.

According to Marshall :"(...) the aggregate 'site value’ of any piece of building land is that which it would have if cleared of buildings and sold in a free market.
