Summer fallow is the practice of keeping land free of all vegetation throughout one season for the purpose of storing a part of the rainfall of that period in the soil for the use of crops the following year. Summer fallow has been practiced in various parts of the world for several centuries, and to a limited extent in some sections of western United States since the country was settled. It is a common practice in the light-rainfall sections of Canada and of the Pacific Northwest at the present time.

This practice is optional in some areas but necessary in the drier cropland areas of the West. Other types of fallow, such as cropland planted to soil improvement crops but not harvested, and cropland left idle all year, are not included in cultivated summer fallow.

If it is given a slight push, such as a bump from the Shuttle while undergoing a docking procedure, the ISS [International Space Station] vibrates with a to-and-fro shaking motion. Student Activity : Docking the Shuttle to an oscillating Space Station is a bit like trying to toss a ball into a swaying bucket from a distance. The trajectory of the ball must be perfect(the launch speed, angle and direction) and synchronized exactly with the motion of the oscillating bucket. Try it. Student Challenge : Clamp one end of a 30 cm steel ruler to the edge of a table so that it sticks straight out. Bend the free end of the ruler downward a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Attach a heavy mass(approximately 200 grams), such as a large blob of putty or Plasticine, to the free end of the ruler. Again, depress the free end of the ruler a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Try doubling the mass or changing the length of the free part of the ruler. Observe what happens to the motion of the ruler as the mass or length changes. Design an experiment to quantitatively measure the effect you have observed. Relate your findings to the oscillating behaviour of the International Space Station as it grows in mass and length.

Smoke plumes that rise through the environment due to buoyancy or momentum become diluted with environmental air, where the rate of dilution is proportional to the rise rate of the plume. The entrainment coefficient is this constant of proportionality. This concept of lateral entrainment does not work well for convective thermals in the atmospheric boundary layer. The Centre national d’études spatiales(CNES) is developing an atomic clock of unequaled precision, which will be launched in 2003 aboard the International Space Station(ISS). The PHARAO clock(Cooled Atom In-Orbit Atomic Clock Project)... uses cooled cesium atoms in order to reach an accuracy and stability 10 to 100 times higher than any other high-performance existing calibrating clocks. The Cesium atoms are thrown on a free flight in a cavity enabling interaction with a radio-frequency field. They then transfer their intrinsic accuracy and stability qualities to the piezoelectric oscillator. The lack of gravity increases the time in which the atoms interact with the piezoelectric oscillator, which then increases the resolution and accuracy of the clock by a 10 factor. PHARAO will belong to ESA's ACES(Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space) payload within the frame of one of its ISS program. The ACES mission will be divided in two parts. The first one, which should last six months, will mostly focus on the PHARAO clock performance. The second part of the mission will last 12 months and will allow the international scientific community to use the clock for specific experiments(clocks’ synchronization, General Relativity tests, geodesy, etc.).
