CONT

Reed instruments. Two kinds of reeds are used in musical instruments, the free reed and the beating reed.

Record 2 2022-08-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Wind Instruments
DEF

A reed in a musical instrument that vibrates against the edges of an air opening ... to which it is attached.

CONT

Reeds are usually divided into two kinds, the beating, and the free reed.... Both forms possess the elastic tongue; but the beating reed differs from the free reed in that the tongue is made to cover the orifice through which the air passes and slightly to overlap its edges; whereas in the latter it passes freely, as the name implies, though with but little room to spare, past the edges of the slit in which it is adapted.... The beating reed is farther subdivided into single and double varieties, the former represented by the clarinet, and by the usual organ reeds; the latter appearing in the oboe and bassoon.

Record 3 2022-08-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Wind Instruments
CONT

Free reed instruments have a reed that does not come in direct contact with the player. The reed is a blade of wood, metal, or other man-made material attached at one end only to a frame so that the blade is free to vibrate when activated by a stream of air passing over it.

OBS

Examples of free-reed instruments include harmonicas, accordions, and concertinas, among others.

[...] un instrument à anche libre est un instrument à vent, utilisant une anche libre, c'est-à-dire qu'elle peut se déplacer librement de part et d'autre de sa position de repos.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Wind Instruments
DEF

A reed in a musical instrument ... that vibrates in an air opening just large enough to allow the reed to move freely.

CONT

... a free reed is a small strip of material(most commonly of metal, but in some cases made of plastic or vegetable matter such as bamboo)... fixed at one end, but which is set in or over a slot that is fractionally wider than the reed itself. As a result, when pressure(or suction) is applied, the reed swings freely though the slot to set up a vibrating column of air which gives voice to the instrument.

CONT

The distance between both filling stop motions can be adjusted in accordance with filling yarn elasticity. After reed beat-up the thread is taken up by the deflection nozzle so that the stretching nozzle remains always free for the next filling insertion.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Outillage et équipement (Industries du textile)
  • Tissage (Industries du textile)
CONT

La distance entre les deux casse-trames peut être réglée en fonction de l’élasticité du fil de trame. Après la frappe du peigne, le fil est repris par la buse de renvoi, afin de libérer la buse d’étirage pour l’insertion de la trame suivante.

Component part of reed pipes with which the length of the pipe can be increased or diminished.

CONT

Hidden inside the pipe foot is a metal reed, usually made of brass. The tuning wire is springy and holds part of the reed firmly against the open side of the air channel called the shallot, leaving enough free to have the desired vibration frequency.... If the tuning wire is moved downward, the active portion of the reed is shortened and its pitch raised.

Many of the pipes in a good organ work in an entirely different way.... Hidden inside the pipe foot is a metal reed, usually made of brass. The tuning wire is springy and holds part of the reed firmly against the open side of the air channel called the shallot, leaving enough free to have the desired vibration frequency.

CONT
