DEF

A tank which is not completely filled or empty.

CONT

The free surface effect is a mechanism which can cause a watercraft to become unstable and capsize. It refers to the tendency of liquids... to move in response to changes in the attitude of a craft's cargo holds, decks, or liquid tanks in reaction to operator-induced motions... When referring to the free surface effect, the condition of a tank that is not full is described as a "slack tank"...

The International Register of Potentially Toxic Chemicals was established in 1976 as a bureau of the UN Environment Programme. This office is located in Geneva. IRPTC' s mandate is to collect information on hazardous chemicals and disseminate it to anyone who needs the data. The office operates a global network for information exchange. A database on all toxic chemicals serves as the basis of this network and free publications help to spread the word. The Register also offers training in areas related to the control of hazards and provides a Query Response Service to help in the event of emergencies.

OBS

In recent years studies of enzyme conformational changes have become highly sophisticated. By a variety of physical techniques they have revealed the great complexity of response of enzymes to small molecules.... One method uses ultrasonics to study the pH induced conformational transition in the active centers of the enzymes. The method utilizes the observation that ultrasonic cavitation produces hydroxyl and hydroperoxyl free radicals in water solution. Penetration of these radicals into the enzyme active center results in enzyme inactivation due to destruction of certain functional groups important for the catalytic activity, typically tryptophan residues.... Thus, a kinetic study of the enzyme ultrasonic inactivation allows us to determine the parameters associated with the conformational changes in the enzyme active center.

Domaine(s)

CONT

OBS

The Special Program of Assistance for Africa(SPA) was established in 1987 as a response to the economic crises of the debt-distressed countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. An informal association of donors, the SPA was intended to support the countries structural adjustment programs with the International Development Association and the International Monetary Fund. The SPA did respond to the challenge. Free of the restrictive formality of other fora, donors were able to test ideas and develop a mutual understanding. High-level donor representation provided the opportunity for meaningful interactions with World Bank and IMF policy makers. The SPA helped to channel substantial quick-disbursing aid. Through peer pressure, it improved donor procedures. It broadened its agenda to address structural impediments to broad-based development. It provided a platform for frank and open exchanges on Africa's economic and social policy issues. It facilitated a convergence of development assistance goals and practices while preserving flexibility.

OBS

CONT

Phytochelatins(PCs) are intracellular metal ligands produced by plants, fungi and algae in response to increase of metals in their environment. They are small metal-binding polypeptides, enzymatically produced from glutathione to form amino acids sequences(g-Glu-Cys) n-Gly where n=2 to 11. They sequester metals inside the cells by binding them through thiol coordination and by this way, limit damage to metabolic processes in reducing the cytotoxic free metal ion.

DEF

A rotation anemometer which has a horizontal axis upon which helical shaped vanes are mounted.

CONT

Another increasingly popular type of anemometer is the propeller anemometer. This anemometer is simply a very small two- or three-blade propeller, calibrated so that the revolutions per minute (rpm) corresponds to specific wind speeds. This anemometer is known as a "lift" device because it relies upon the rational lift caused by the wind on the propellers to measure the wind speed. By using two propellers held fixed at a perpendicular angle to each other, one can simultaneously measure the wind speed and direction using vector analysis. By including a third propeller positioned vertically relative to the other two, vertical wind movements also can be measured. It should be noted that the effect of variations in air density (due to temperature and/or pressure conditions) are accounted for differently in lift devices (for example, propeller anemometers) and drag devices (for example, cup anemometers).

CONT

The... propellor anemometer consists of a circular array of blades, usually not less than three, mounted at one end of a horizontal shaft; the blades are free to rotate in response to wind forces acting on them. A wind vane is attached to the opposite end of the shaft. The horizontal shaft is connected to a vertical shaft which, being mounted in bearings, turns as the varying wind direction acts on the vane.

CONT

THEORY OF MEASUREMENTS: Wind speed: Propeller anemometer. Wind direction: Wind vane.

DEF
