In the 1980s, American sociologist Ray Oldenburg developed the notion of a "third place" : a space for informal, free social interaction, essential to democracy.... The third place is not home and not work, but instead one of the physical settings that have throughout history encouraged a sense of warmth, conviviality, and that special kind of human sustenance we call community. These settings include cafés, taverns, libraries and hair salons, where people from different walks of life gather to hang out in an informal atmosphere. 2, record 2, English, - third%20place

The most common type of CVT employs a steel belt and two pulleys. Rather than step among four or five gears of different sizes, the CVT varies the effective diameter of the drive pulley and driven pulley to create a broad range of drive ratios free of the shift feel of conventional transmissions. Imagine riding a bike on which the sprocket and rear gear magically change size without requiring the chain to jump from one gear to another, and you have the basic idea. By increasing or decreasing the space between the pulleys’ respective halves, the CVT varies the effective diameter of the conical inner surfaces on which the belt rides. It varies these parameters at any time, at any engine or vehicle speed. 4, record 24, English, - continuously%20variable%20transmission

Record number: 30, Textual support number: 1 CONT
2, record 30, French, - inertie%20gyroscopique

Free-Space Optics(also known as FSO, Wireless Optics or Optical Wireless) is an optical data, voice and video transmission system. Like fiber optic cable, wireless optics communication systems use laser light to transmit a digital signal between two transceivers. However, unlike fiber, the laser like is transtmited through the air(free-space) instead of through a glass strand. In order for the digital signal to be transmitted and received, there must be clear line of site between each wireless optics unit. In other words, there should be no obstructions such as trees or buildings between the transceiver units. 1, record 31, English, - free%2Dspace%20optics
Record number: 31, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The technology is useful where the physical connection of the transmit and receive locations is difficult, for example in cities where the laying of fibre optic cables is expensive. Free Space Optics is also used to communicate between space-craft, since outside of the atmosphere there is little to distort the signal. The optical links usually use infrared laser light, although low-data-rate communication over short distances is possible using LEDs [Light Emitting Diode]. IrDA [Infrared Data Association] is a very simple form of free-space optical communications. Distances up to the order of 10 km are possible, but the distance and data rate of connection is highly dependent on atmospheric conditions. 7, record 31, English, - free%2Dspace%20optics

The term antistatic refers to a condition where static generation is inhibited during contact and separation with a different material. In general, antistatic carpet is any carpet product that will generate less static electricity than standard carpet. [It] is not conductive and it is not possible to ground anti-static carpet [which] usually contains bi-component yarns. The reason for specifying antistatic carpet is to establish a space that will be free of static shocks, or zaps. Most new antistatic carpet will prevent shocks as long as the relative humidity(RH) is above 25%. Antistatic carpet should not be confused with conductive or ESD [electrostatic discharge] carpet. Antistatic is not a permanent property. 1, record 39, English, - antistatic%20carpet

Shake, Rattle & Roll Poster. Shake :... The International Space Station undergoes oscillations. If it is given a slight push, such as a bump from the Shuttle while undergoing a docking procedure, the ISS [International Space Station] vibrates with a to-and-fro shaking motion. Student Activity : Docking the Shuttle to an oscillating Space Station is a bit like trying to toss a ball into a swaying bucket from a distance. The trajectory of the ball must be perfect(the launch speed, angle and direction) and synchronized exactly with the motion of the oscillating bucket. Try it. Student Challenge : Clamp one end of a 30 cm steel ruler to the edge of a table so that it sticks straight out. Bend the free end of the ruler downward a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Attach a heavy mass(approximately 200 grams), such as a large blob of putty or Plasticine, to the free end of the ruler. Again, depress the free end of the ruler a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Try doubling the mass or changing the length of the free part of the ruler. Observe what happens to the motion of the ruler as the mass or length changes. Design an experiment to quantitatively measure the effect you have observed. Relate your findings to the oscillating behaviour of the International Space Station as it grows in mass and length. 1, record 44, English, - shake

Affiche «Rock'n'roll spatial». Vibrations : [...]

The Centre national d’études spatiales(CNES) is developing an atomic clock of unequaled precision, which will be launched in 2003 aboard the International Space Station(ISS). The PHARAO clock(Cooled Atom In-Orbit Atomic Clock Project)... uses cooled cesium atoms in order to reach an accuracy and stability 10 to 100 times higher than any other high-performance existing calibrating clocks. The Cesium atoms are thrown on a free flight in a cavity enabling interaction with a radio-frequency field. They then transfer their intrinsic accuracy and stability qualities to the piezoelectric oscillator. The lack of gravity increases the time in which the atoms interact with the piezoelectric oscillator, which then increases the resolution and accuracy of the clock by a 10 factor. PHARAO will belong to ESA's ACES(Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space) payload within the frame of one of its ISS program. The ACES mission will be divided in two parts. The first one, which should last six months, will mostly focus on the PHARAO clock performance. The second part of the mission will last 12 months and will allow the international scientific community to use the clock for specific experiments(clocks’ synchronization, General Relativity tests, geodesy, etc.). 2, record 50, English, - ACES%20mission

The gyroscope exhibits two predominant characteristics. Rigidity in space. Precession. Rigidity in space. The gyroscope resists turning. When it is "gimbaled"(free to move in a given direction) such that it is free to move either in 1, 2 or 3 dimensions, any surface such as an instrument dial attached to the gyro assembly will remain rigid in space even though the case of the gyro turns. The attitude indicator(AI) and the heading indicator(HI) use this property of rigidity in space for their operation. 2, record 61, English, - rigid%20in%20space

Telephones are answered with your firm's name and you pay a monthly rental and phone answering fee plus additional charges for specific services used or furniture rented. Costs of these services vary by region and by size of space. You are usually free to move within the building as your space needs change. Oil furnaces. Indoor oil furnaces... are available in upflow, downflow, horizontal and low-boy configurations for ducted systems. They are also available as floor furnaces, wall furnaces, and free standing space heaters. Oil-fired outdoor furnaces and combination units are rare.... The ducted system, oil-fired, forced air furnaces are usually equipped with pressure-atomizing burners. The pump pressure and the orifice size of the injection nozzle regulate the firing rate of the furnace. Electric ignition is used to ignite the burners.... The combustion chamber and heat exchanger of oil-fired furnaces are normally formed as a common single chamber. It is formed from heavy gage steel into a welded assembly. The hot flue products flow through the inside of the heat exchanger into the chimney. The conditioned air flows over the outside of the heat exchanger and into the air supply plenum. 1, record 78, English, - oil%20furnace

5, record 78, French, - g%C3%A9n%C3%A9rateur%20%C3%A0%20mazout
