Hogmanay is the Scots word for the last day of the year and is synonymous with the celebration of the New Year in the Scottish manner. Its official date is the 31 December. However this is normally only the start of a celebration which lasts through the night until the morning of the 1 January or, in many cases, 2 January. The roots of Hogmanay reach back to the pagan celebration of the winter solstice. In Europe, this evolved into the ancient celebration of Saturnalia, a great Roman winter festival, where people celebrated completely free of restraint and inhibition. The Vikings celebrated Yule, which later became the Twelve Days of Christmas, or the "Daft Days" as they were sometimes called in Scotland. The winter festival went underground with the Protestant Reformation and ensuing years, but re-emerged near the end of the 17th century. 1, record 6, English, - Hogmanay

Free learning may be all very well and good for the future, but what about those of us who have already been through the system? How can we establish a more positive and fruitful relationship to learning? The answer, it seems to me, is to clean out the garbage, expand your learning skills, and then use those skills. It is never too late to start being a free learner. As a start along that direction, I would especially recommend Jean Houston's The Possible Human. Get together with some friends and start a learning circle devoted to expanding your learning capacities. You might be amazed at the results. 1, record 8, English, - free%20learner

It was bound to happen : gambling is heading for the information highway. In October Gaming Entertainment Television(GET), a cable-TV station based in Pittsburgh, is to start broadcasting horse-racing, poker and $1m-jackpot bingo, all of which will allow interactive gambling. At the same time, Sony's Game Show Channel, based in Los Angeles, is promising interactive versions of "Wheel of Fortune" and "The Price is Right". There is a market : 6m Americans play(by mailing in cards) the ordinary TV version of "The Price is Right".... interactivity is simply a wheeze to push up its ratings. In its first phase it will allow viewers to play for free(ie, without betting real money) and will offer small prizes to those who win. Eventually, however, it may permit real betting too. 1, record 11, English, - interactive%20gambling
